The latest in my W210 saga. The car is my "new" 1999 4matic wagon. The stainless steel muffler system has begun to hole out. That's fine, from the cat back the system is simple and cheap enough. But the problem I'm having is with the left side cat. The problem is that one of the bolts (not studs) that hold it to the exhaust manifold has rusted out, the head is completely gone. The only thing left is the the stub that's stuck in the manifold. I don't think I can reach up in there with a drill and tap. I could be hallucinating, but it also looks to me like the manifold is made of pressed stainless. The flange bolt is secured to a captive nut on the manifold. So I'm concerned that even if I manage to get the old bolt out, there's really nothing to tap into. I have a suspicion that I'm going to have to replace the whole exhaust manifold, which means lifting the engine completely out of the car. It's not supposed to be this difficult.
