When you boost a car, the combination of high pressure and temperature increases knock tendency. Take a look at the specs for turbo cars....often they run 2-3 compression points lower than unboosted cars. Water injection will cool the mixture and quench knock, up to a point. Ok, got a strange one for you all. '84 300D with a bad piston slap. Yesterday, with a little over 1/4 tank showing on the gauge, I noticed that it was chugging a bit sometimes--tight corners, etc., like it was fuel-starved. Hmmmm. Then this morning, while reading just a smudge below 1/4 tank, it went into a permanent chug, and ceased to move forward. I then assumed that the gas gauge was lying, though it had previously worked fine, and my wife came, I put in 5 quarts of diesel fuel and it fired right back up like always. [Klata KLUNK klata KLUNK etc....the knock is getting pretty rough......] ANYWAY, I then drove it to the gas station, where I put in....about 13 gallons before it overflowed. I know for a fact that when wiped out, that tank will take about 18 gallons, so apparently, my gauge was right, and something is keeping it from sucking the bottom of the tank up. It acts like a pinhole rustout in the lift tube. And no, I have not crossed the draw/return lines. Everything used to be just fine in the current configuration. Thoughts? What is the issue and what is the fix? (Other than never using the bottom 1/4 of the tank?)
