Poor 300SD was covered in dust & cobwebs. Sat in the car, turned the key - nothing. Not so much as a click. Tried my aux battery box - got the engine to turn over a little - but no joy. Got the airport folks to give me a jump. His cables were too puny - the engine barely turned. My cable is puny too, but I got the bright idea of putting mine in parallel with his - then the car started right up. I headed out in search of a carwash - and the muffler fell off. The whole exhaust system is held on with these rubber donuts - and they're just not forever in the Valley heat. I seem to remember replacing them a year ago.... So I tied the muffler up with rope, and headed into town. There was a european car repair place that had been recommended to me. I got there, they were VERY pleasant and they put things back together with new donuts while I waited. Cost me a total of $36.00, not too bad. Even though the car had been running now for about an hour, it still did not restart. Not even a click. They gave me a jump with THEIR battery box, and I headed on my way. Stopped for lunch in a DRIVE THROUGH ( El Pollo Loco )without stopping the engine. Went to my apartment complex, looked around, and picked up a few things there, WITHOUT STOPPING THE ENGINE. In fact, I didn't stop the engine til I was back in my parking space at the airport. Tried the key again, just for yuks - not even a click. So I pulled the battery, threw it in the airplane, flew home, and took it back to the AutoZone, where they happily gave me a new battery. No fuss no muss no argument. Battery box is fairly rusty. Guess I'll take along some spray cans of paint next trip. - Jerry Kaidor ( jerry-at-tr2.com ) ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #2519 **********************************
