Baker - 13 Sep '07 Drove up Washington Hyw 542 (Mt. Baker Hwy) east of Bellingham, WA, until it ended on top of a mountain sitting between Shuksan, Mt. Baker and Tabletop. Just over 5,000 feet above Sea Level, around 30 miles east of Bellingham. Perfect weather. Recommend this trip to anyone; best time of year seems to be August/September, the snow should be melted by then, and the next batch of snow won't be in yet... In 1998/1999 the world record for snow fall was set on Mt. Baker... 1,140 inches!!! There is a ski resort at the base of the mountain, but the higher elevations are unlikely to be open once the snow starts. enjoy the pictures. easy day trip from Seattle. Fellow list members, Well, I found my way back! It's been an eventful and very trying couple of weeks. On August 31st, after an attempted colonoscopy, I was told that I had colon cancer. The doctors could not confirm that there was definitely cancer present because the location of the tumor in the lower portion of the colon was almost completely blocked and they could not get the camera around it to look at the rest of my insides. But, based on what they could see, and a CAT Scan, they felt certain that the cancer was only in the colon and had not spread. On September 5th they did the surgery. The operation was expected to take 3-6 hours. I was on the table for 8 1/2... What they found was that I did not have cancer! That was great news!!! The growth in my colon was a tennis ball sized "diverticulum". I had heard of diverticulitis, but really didn't know what it was. I do now.... It's nothing to mess with. In a nutshell, feces attach themselves to the wall of the colon. Over time, more feces join the mass and it grows in size. In the early stages, the only way you'd know there was a problem developing is by having a colonoscopy. In that procedure, they insert a camera through your rectum and run it up into the colon. Without the benefit of a colonoscopy, the only way you'd know you had a problem, at least in my case, would be a chronic case of constipation or diarrhea. They made a 19 inch incision down the middle of my stomach area and opened me up. They found that the tennis ball in my colon had hardened and was pressing hard against my prostate and had almost fused to my bladder. When they went to put me back together, they couldn't stitch or staple my colon properly due to the condition of the walls. How they finally accomplished that I don't know. What they had to do was create a colostomy. The colostomy involves routing part of the intestine though the abdomen wall positioning it, in my case, about 4 inches to the left of my belly button and inch or two lower. A colostomy bag is attached to the "intestine". In short, my solid waste exits my body directly to the bag, involuntarily, instead of though my rectum. Actually, it's not all that bad. I'll spare you the gross details.... It can be embarrassing at times, though. The colostomy can be reversed, and will be, in 6-12 months. But, I'll have to be opened up all over again. The recovery time should be shorter then. My current recovery time looks to be 6-8 weeks. They had me opened up for some 8 1/2 hours and made quite a few changes to my internals. I no longer have an appendix or a gall bladder. According to my doctor, those two organs, which aren't really needed, were removed in case they acted up after surgery. It would have presented a major problem if they'd had to re-open me again so soon after major surgery. I thanked my doctor for thinking ahead, but asked if he'd taken anything I needed... He assured me he hadn't.... So, I dodged the cancer bullet. You just cannot imagine how excited, and relieved I was to hear that news!!! I'm feeling a little better each day. I am finally getting my appetite back and hope to gain back 10 of the 22 lbs. I lost this last 6 months. I'm 5'6" tall and, currently, 141 lbs. I haven't weighed that little since Marine Corps boot camp in '66. At my current weight, I'm feeling a bit puny. Another 10 pounds should correct that problem. Well, it's back to the popcorn watch. Unfortunately, I cannot eat popcorn from not on, so Alec and Jim, whatcha suggest?? It's good to be back!
