At least my affliction isn't as bad as John's, but it is acting up again. I'm itching to move on from my 89 300CE with 227K miles. She's starting to ask for big chunks of money more often. I really want to try the smart when it goes on sale this spring, but my first chance to actually touch the thing, let alone drive it, isn't coming around till late next month, and I expect that their road tour marketing program will keep very tight reins on the driving style and surface conditions of the test drive. If the smart isn't when I get to try it, I'm going back to the black, baby. Probably an 83 W126 OM617 300SD. In that teal exterior if it was available that year, although I think that wasn't introduced until 86. That I overpaid for by finding a previous owner that got ALL the repair work done. I haven't had an S Class, and I miss the sound of that engine. Anybody else notice that those Sprinter Vans, which they snuck in to the US as Freightliners for one model year before they slapped a Dodge grill on their noses, definitely sound closely related to an OM616/7? I catch myself in parking lots recognizing the Benz diesel sound and happily turning to view the source, and a couple of times it has been a Sprinter van. It'll be tough to pass up on a W124 diesel like John's, but I want to try an S class. I've thought about a 79 or 80 W116 300SD. Now there's a truly beautiful Old School car, but I'm afraid the W123/W126 era is about as primitive as I want to go. Semi-trailing arm rear suspension instead of the W116's swing arms, but those swing arms are suspending some magnificent chrome and metal work, aren't they? Ah well. Decisions, decisions. I trip over those every so often, not teal, but 81-85 SDs. Nice pieces of machinery, and they don't command a lot of money for a good one. I have two 124s, though one is probably not going to see the road again. They're nice, but the 126s I've driven all seem a bit more stately, and I think that's the route I'm going if I get another benz. The 116 doesn't handle bad for as primitive of a suspension as it has, just watch out for rust - the 116 could hide a lot of rust.
