The next something the 300SD needs: circulation fan motor replacement. It was one of the most obnoxious squeals I've heard, that once started, wouldn't quit unless the moons were aligned correctly. It was most entertaining in a Halloween, neck hair standing on end, sorta way. I could drive from Lynnwood to Tacoma without issue and then a drive to the corner store wouldn't allow me to turn the circulation on due to the noise coming from under the dash. As tho way of with most projects. Good for a bit, followed by the stumper. This one progressed smoothly with the removal of the plastic bits surrounding the fan & subsequent removal of the unit itself from under the passenger side dash. The fun began when trying to remove the plastic fan, mouse cage [or something similar] as referred too by her dad, from the fan motor. It would be cool to have in-law's close as he's worked on Benz's for the better part of 30 years... The last two pictures here show the new electric motor and the old one that has the plastic fan on it that I can't figure out how to remove. http://web.mac.com/kegill/iWeb/03ACBA7A-F9C9-4259-A5AC-07D42E0A78F6/Mercedes .html Its been suggested to simply replace it. My inclination being not to replace so I don't add to our pile-o-garbage. From what I've read, the squirrel cage should be changed in case it has gotten out of balance. I have done the brushes change in the motor but it didn't last long due to a deep gouge in the armature. When I bought the whole setup it included the black plastic that the motor is mounted to but it wasn't cheap. But, it's working great! I believe that the squirrel cage is a press fit onto the motor shaft. You may need to make a tool to pull it off without affecting the cage. Marc Z. Does anyone know where that is? As this wire leaves the switch it is bundled with many others. It cannot be a grounding issue as all of the indicator lights and gauges work in the instrument cluster and switches work also. Any ideas?
