That is the prior generation, and it looks like it was a Canadian delivery. The couple of firms that were federalizing those for the US were charging 25 to 30 thousand. I think you can still buy one from them, basically brand new. Similar to when MB brought over the GWagen for half the price of that importer in Arizona or New Mexico, I suspect the prior model smarts will collapse in resale value now that new ones will be selling for 14 or 15 thousand. The newer model is supposed to drive substantially better than the prior model, it's just that we can't get diesels yet in the new ones. But I think a 6'6" guy can fit. Very few new diesels available in the US. I attribute it to a combination of aggressive emissions standards and General Motors ruining the mass public's impression of diesel cars back in the 70s. According to information I got from the staff at the smart event here in Austin last week, they are not yet offering a diesel in the new smart even in Canada. He claimed it was strictly an emissions issue. I think even the new BlueTec Benz diesels are only 45-state certified, even though they were trying really hard to get 50-state certification. Those remaining 5 states include some of the biggest sales markets, making it even more financially challenging to offer diesels if they can't sell there. Also, Citroen and Alfa abandoned the US long, long ago, and Ford offers very few interesting cars here. Getting any of the three you mentioned brought in may involve additional regulations besides emissions, including crash performance, headlight height, etc. We got some crazy rules here.
