The owner drove it up from FL and is looking to make more space in his barn. I have been in this type car when used as a Taxi down in S. America and it always struck me as roomy, dependable if noisy. It has the automatic trans., not manual. Any weakness there? I know there have been a lot of posts back and forth on the bad/good side of these cars. I expect it to be slow to get rolling and noisy, but other than that, what are the weak points I should be looking for/at besides leaks, cracked dash and rusty towers? Says the A/C not cold and the dash lights quit working. I expect the latter to be dirty/corroded contacts at the fuse box. Not that I can test the A/C at the current 18F Owner said it yielded 37MPG on the way up from FL. Interior real clean, body sound (no rust) and a recent paint job. Has been parked for a few months. Will check mail tomorrow AM before heading to work and DB hunting. His asking is 3850 OBO. If it is as good as he claims, what is it worth on the open market? I never got more than 28mpg with my '82 240D. But I think people have reported low 30's. I paid $2800 for mine with 200k+ on the clock so that "might" be in the ball park. Today he finally drove Rambo... and opened the hood of his 460 powered Javelin... http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2008/01-Jan-24-Seattle-Javelin-Rambo/ALL.html I talked mark into installing the racor filter elements for omega that I picked up in seattle... but no happiness on getting Omega started. :( (not sure if I shared the pictures from last week when we brought omega home: The WJ did a superb job of hauling Omega... the trailer and omega were definetly heavier than the wj... but the surge brake worked amazingly well. the trailer was 2,000lbs, Omega must be at least 5,000lbs with dual tanks and the 6.2L Diesel. The Wj weighs around 3900lbs... but that 4.7L V8 is amazing... I'm still thinking that would be the best driveline for Superdawg... (he's coming home later) http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2008/01-Jan-19-mark-snow-omega_recovery/ALL.html ) mark actually took the '89 GW into seattle tonight... we'll see how well that goes, he wanted to take my benz... :) still need to bleed the fuel system on Omega, did find out that the filter on the primary side was dry, so when it was started it completely emptied all the filters and lines... oh boy. I'm thinking of using my vacuum tester/pump to bleed it. If my ear isn't hurting too much tomorrow I'll spend some quality time with my Jeep. :) supposed to be cold the next few days, 50% chance of snow sat/sun too... need to get my jeep running!!! anyone have any tricks for quickly priming a 6.2L Diesel? :) ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- there's a solution for every problem; problem is can we afford the solution? - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2008 01:22:07 -0600 From: Jon Filina Subject: Re: [db] New toy, maybe Edward, The asking price seems high, but I've seen higher. I'd expect to get 28-30 mpg, depending on the driving conditions. That's what I got with my '81 240D. It had a stick, but the mpg difference should only be 1-2. The difference in power (if you can use that word in the same sentence as "240D"... ;-) ) is negligible. The car is almost a slug, but a stately looking one. I wish I still had mine. If the A/C only blows "cool", just recharge it. It no cool air comes out, the total repair for compressor, etc, will run around $1200 if a shop does it. Of course, you won't be able to know what the state of the A/C is for several months unless you test it in a heated garage. The W123's are pretty much bullet proof. The engine is the Eveready Bunny of the MB diesels. I know of a guy who replaced his 240D engine with a factory rebuilt one at 728,000 miles. It was still running, but was going through a quart of oil every 50 miles. The windshield will probably be pitted, but you won't notice it until you drive into the sun on a damp morning. All the rubber parts will possibly be dried out and may need replacing. In other words, expect to address the normal age related problems associated with any "antique". I'd jump at it for $2500 if it is as clean as it is described. Take pictures... I got a consistent 29 MPG (measured) in my '92 300CD, mixed, and I drove it to the boards all the time. Good luck. J.B.
