I don't think it's a big deal... the guy has had it for over 15 years, bought his wife a 2002 benz... movin' on up. ;) john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2008 22:44:32 -0600 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: RE: [db] '85 300D The shifting issue is probably just one of the two inputs to the tranny (besides the input shaft). There's the mechanical linkage from all the accelerator rods that goes almost straight toward a joint on the firewall, then down to the tranny. Then there's vacuum going to the transmission. I never remember which connection does what, but I think it's just one of those two that tells the tranny how quickly or hard to shift. When it's working right, the transmission shifts more quickly and positively under hard acceleration, and more sedately when puttering around. That's exactly the variability and adaptability that I haven't yet found in the automated manual transmission of the smart fortwo. :-( I'm leaning toward the vacuum as the culprit on your find. As you well know, it can be time consuming but inexpensive.
