I always started out with German, figuring Americans were not as well liked. Turns out they don't like anyone, especially Germans or Americans. :) All three countries have pronounced arrogance in their genetic code, so this is an understandable situation. :) What was amazing to me on my last trip to Europe was the amount of English spoken openly... I'd been to Amsterdam many times before and while finding someone who spoke English was quite easy, it wasn't openly used. Dutch or German were more prevelant in the '70s. I wouldn't mind going back... might visit the British Isles this time... need to find cheap air travel and a cheap rental car... then find cheap places to stay... then I need to come up with the money. ;) There were a number of advantags of living in europe as part of the military. I had a local base of operations, gas rations, military bases for shopping, etc. If something went horribly wrong we'd just pull into a base and have access to all of the services we needed... the other big issue is the weakness of the dollar... :( We could rent a nice economical Diesel and drive... would love to see some of the cities in what was East Germany, Berlin, Wittenburg, and then down to see Prague, and then down to Firenza... I wonder if we could fly in to Ireland, get a Diesel (LHD) and drive down to the Chunnel, over across France to Berlin, down to Wittenburg, over to Prague, then down into Italy by way of Interlaken. ;) when I get some time I'll have to map out the costs and distances... that trip could easily be done in two weeks... wonder if we could fly home from Rome then? so much to see, so much to do... so little money. ;) ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- On Wed, 19 Mar 2008, Stephen Rigley wrote: # ah, I get ya now, yeah, always a mistake to start a conversation in anything # other than French, a bit more leniency on their part might work ;-) # Steve # # # On Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 4:57 PM, john wrote: # # > I guess it can be summed up in this... # > # > the french are worse than americans when it comes to things # > like language... # > ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2008 13:20:31 -0700 From: chuck goolsbee Subject: Re: fsj: Re: [db] mark your calendar... I'd ship the old Jaguar over and drive it. =) Exploring the world in an old sportscar is a sublime way to travel. Sure, I'll have to become acquainted with several spare parts suppliers and overnight shipping companies. I'd have to be prepared to not live on a schedule and just do what strikes my fancy or sit on the roadside or a hotel room with greasy fingers futzing with slippery tools or a voltmeter. But who cares?! Being in a car like that breaks down people's defensive arrogance, destroys language barriers, and transforms me from being a "tourist" into a curiosity, a wonder, a bridge to the past. Nope, you won't be able to rent a LHD diesel that easily here.. but I'd go with a RHD for here and the UK (if they'll let you take it over the Irish sea), I wouldn't bother with the ferrys (flights are v.cheap, www.ryanair.com for example), re-rent in LHD in France/Germany. 2 weeks? You might see it.. but only from the driver's seat.. 627 return in Oct for Seattle to Dublin.. via www.ebookers.ie ;-) Am sure you can change the point of departure. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2008 10:00:47 +0000 From: "Stephen Rigley" Subject: [db] XJ Diesel project Hi, So, I've returned to my '96 XJ sport 2.5TD project (after a 4 month break due to busy life), I'm looking to get at the camshaft to replace the pushrod lifter things (technical term there) + the pushrod clips (the pushrods on cylinder #4 kept popping out). I'd gotten as far as loosening the head bolts, then discovered that 5 of them were hidden under the injectors, so they had to come out. They didn't want to. A 28mm spanner + a diesel socket were too big, so I went and bought the 27mm version.. guess what.. too small!! No, imperial size inbetween.. I took my dremel to the 27mm and ground it out until it fit. The injectors still didn't want to come out, even with a big torque wrench on there.. I didn't like doing it but "Goliath" (my impact wrench) had to be used to get them out! Whoever was in there last must be built like Tyson. So, the plan is, the heads (one per cylinder) come off Monday, then timing cover then pull the camshaft.. My 2.1L TD was a nice little unit, but a bit underpowered and parts were overpriced, but it worked quite well in the Cherokee. The 2.5L TD would be a much nicer setup. I've got the lift pump coming today for my 6.2L Diesel Grand Wagoneer project. Working from home today so as soon as I'm off work I can start wrenching. :) My son is going to chase the parts while I'm working. Even with the GW project I am planning for the next Diesel project, and that will either be a WJ or XJ version with a Mercedes Diesel... long term plans, no parts acquisitions yet... :) john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://freegift.com ** http://wagoneers.com ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- On Thu, 20 Mar 2008, Stephen Rigley wrote: # Hi, # # So, I've returned to my '96 XJ sport 2.5TD project (after a 4 month break # due to busy life), I'm looking to get at the camshaft to replace the pushrod # lifter things (technical term there) + the pushrod clips (the pushrods on # cylinder #4 kept popping out). # I'd gotten as far as loosening the head bolts, then discovered that 5 of # them were hidden under the injectors, so they had to come out.
