On W201s I had the front springs out a couple of times and I was able to remove them without using a spring compressor. For this I put the car up on blocks, jacked up the spring carrier a bit, unscrew the nut on top of the shock absorber rod and then lowered carefully the spring carrier. The coil spring could then just taken out. I understand on the W124 the procedure will not work in the front as the spring will not get the required clearance. Even the cheaper spring compressors will not fit easily as the disks are made out of cast iron and are not thin even. Purchasing a Klann compressor does not make any sense as the price is just too high. Wondering whether anybody has remove the factory coil springs by just lowering the spring carrier. What I am mainly interested in is knowing SPEED and ELEVATION. Having a handheld would be nice for hiking. If I could get a handheld that would connect to my laptop for a larger display would be awesome.
