What happens is as the engine ages, the rings get less effective, and the amount of blowby getting recirculated into the intake manifold rises. At some point, you get enough air motion that it starts to carry a notable amount of oil with it. Motor oil will burn at diesel engine internal temperatures but when it gets in the manifold, it starts to run down to the lowest cylinder on the manifold, which then sucks oil in with the intake stroke. During the compression stroke, it preignites, causing a sound very much like gasoline engine "ping." (Virtually identical.) THAT sound took me a long time to figure out! Now I just don't worry about it, because it's virtually harmless. It's an OLD engine....... J - -- Mike Frank wrote: A clang isn't a usual valve noise. Valves actually get quieter as they tighten up. You should do an adjustment once a year, say around 15K miles. The correct Hazet wrenches make this job much easier. If your car has the original aluminum fan, then I would look for something interfering with the blade. What I like to do with any mystery noise is to remove all the fan belts. Then run the motor for a bit (it won't overheat if you keep it to less than a minute). That will tell you whether it's an internal or an external noise. Take it from there. (in particular an NP228). regeared my '91 Grand Wagoneer yesterday from 3.31 to 4.10. Speedo is off about 14%, I believe that's a four tooth difference in the speedo gear, if I recall correctly it's about 3% per tooth... wait, that would be five teeth... wait, maybe I need to check my math and notes... :) I took several readings with the GPS comparing to the speedo... anyway... I haven't pulled my speedo gear out yet, will do that tomorrow. I have an NP219 sitting here and somewhere I have a bucket of gears. I recall someone providing a link to a source on line for new gears... (they're little plastic gears) Oh, the Grand Wagoneer with the 6.2L Diesel isn't radically different or anything... but starting from a stop light it feels "lighter" and much, much, much easier to get going... barely had to touch the pedal to gracefully accelerate. At speed pressing the loud pedal resulted in actual acceleration. The shop discouraged any 0 to 60 time trials until break-in is over... oh, last night after getting it out of the shop and returning to work the power steering return line from the steering box came off and I lost both brakes and power steering... the hose clamp just fell off and the fittings were loose... the shop claims they didn't touch any of that, and I believe them... it's above the axle housing... which means I've driven about 1,600 miles with a time bomb. First thing my wife said was that I had better check everything else... So, the GW is "deadlined" until I can crawl underneath and tighten every bolt and fitting on it. Tomorrow is supposed to be a beautiful day. I just hosed out the carport so I can roll around on the carport floor without having to roll around in muck... :) Oh boy... :) I'll be hooking up the Detroit electrac, my IPF lights, the insignia hd/mp3 deck, new speakers, sound proofing and may try to install the other Grand Cherokee seat on the passenger side... :) A planned vacation day well spent wrenching... :) can hardly wait... off to work on computers now... :) (btw, replaced my wife's Windows PC with a Mac Mini... awesome little system for $599! - also loaded SuSE 10.3 on my Toughbook CF-W5. I may finish the MySql install at work on the SuSE box there... two days of fun!!! :) Remember, the request was for speedometer gear sources for the NP xfr cases... thanx, john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://wagoneers.com ** http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/Omega/ ** - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 2008 09:57:02 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] hey jerry (OT) just booted up into SuSE and saw this tip: KDEPrinting (I) kprinter, KDE's new printing utility supports different print subsystems. If this price plus air ticket 4 tanks of diesel is reasonable to you it would be an adventure to fly out and drive back? Just an idea.
