Yes, it seems to be although it has gotten better. Apparently, it's the stolen car / used car parts capital of Europe. Optima batteries (apparently also made by Johnson) are truly different (and more expensive), and they're supposed to be much better at dealing with discharging. If your car has an electrical drain and sits for long periods, that might be worth the extra money. I also had positive experience with Interstate, and from their "International" line, I was able to get a model that was very appropriate for an 85 300D. Big, lots of power, and terminals in the right position. But the next time I need a battery, I will probably go back to AutoZone for a DuraLast. Friday my local Bosch mechanic called me at about noon saying he might have the 300D 2.5 Turbo finished, IP all shiny, fixed, adjusted and installed. Still ran a bit smokey so he wanted to empty out the old fuel which has been sitting for about 1 year, and put in fresh before handing it off. I figured the injectors were a bit gummy and said to put in a dose of injector cleaner and I would do an Italian tuneup on the highway for a few days and see if things improved. Then at 4 PM another call, sorry, there is diesel pouring out from somewhere in the engine compartment. He gets it back on the hoist and sure enough, something called the "fuel theremostat" is leaking to beat the band. I streak to the computer, get online and yep, there it is, 4 metal outlet nipples and one plastic, held in with a circlip and probably a bad seal or worse, cracked plastic. Two bolts hold it to the engine block somewhere reachable only from below. Ouch - $139 each. Ordered if for delivery to the mechanic but the whole event shot getting the car back for the long weekend!. Mechanic says he is seeing a surge in older MB diesels coming in with fuel system leaks since the ultra low sulfur formulations have hit the market. Don't know if this is for real or not, but the ol wallet is taking yet another hit. Oy! Rusty's folks say it should be here in 3 work days counting from Friday ( one can hope). Maybe this is also the source of the smoke if air was getting into the fuel line that way. Anyone know how this thing is plumbed into the system? The I/O connections seem substantial. Is it on the high pressure side of anything? This item is apparently common across a whole series of MB diesels from the 70's forward to the 90's The one bright bit of news is that the Jetta TDI produced a whopping 51.3 MPG on an all highway run from here to Dayton OH, about 250 miles each way and I had just under 1/4 tank left on the dial pulling into the driveway! Oh, and the deer that re-arranged the passenger side wheel arches, rear door and rear quarter panel 10 miles West of the Ohio line on I-70 only cost $100 out of pocket, insurance covers the rest, whew! 1/10 of a second earlier and that sucker would have been over my hood instead of running into the side of the car.
