I've been hunting for a pump to replace the whiney one in my new wagon, with now luck. Just to close all the loops, I changed the filter and flushed the fluid today. The pump is now silent. I don't know whether the filter was plugged or the fluid contaminated. Either way, problem sloved. If you must run this weekend, just short circuit it by connecting the fuel prefilter outlet directly to the IP with a length of hose. The engine won't be perfect because the fuel temperature will vary, but you'll probably not notice unless there's a sudden freeze. On the trip home, just got home... got 23.75 mpg coming back... had a miserable time keeping it from doing 75 mph... :) no, not really, but it really was happy at 70 mph and did creep up to 75 without a cruise control. most of the trip between portland and seattle is actually 60, with a few stretches of 70... probably about 50 of the 200 miles... So, I'd say that the average speed on return was about 65 mph for the 215 miles or so... not bad to get 23.75 mpg in a 5,600lb 4x4 with the aerodynamics of a brick. :) That's not too far off from the 26 to 28 I used to get with my early '80s 300D and 300SD. :) Did have one problem... kind of serious... the stupid thing won't idle at stop signs/lights... it dies... I have to keep one foot on the brake and one on the gas... I bumped the idle up and it helped, but then I was idling at 30+. Getting started after stopping for a break was interesting... had to rev the engine up and dump it in gear then hold the brake and the gas... once rolling and out on the road it was fine... easily maintained the speed limit up the hills/small passes on I-5. Never downshifted or even dropped out of lockup, unless I nailed it. :) Talked to a few friends, our guess is there is an air leak in one of my fuel lines from the tank selector up to the secondary filter... loose clamp, fitting? I tightened a few up down in Portland but it helped but didn't fix it... Have noticed fuel under the jeep at night sometimes at home... at least we have an explanation... that the mileage is good and it runs great on the freeway means it's nothing really serious... I don't think it's a clogged filter... at 70 mph if I stand on it the thing will move up to 80 mph as easy as it takes off from a stop light... Got this thing dialed in to it's power curve with the 4.10s... cruising at 60 to 75 mph is not a problem, other than vibrations and harsher ride than the WJ or my benz... need to work on isolating the road and engine vibrations from the body... When I got home I tried the leather seats in the '99 WJ... they are definetly better than the cloth WJ seats... that'll be the next project... that and replacing the body and engine mounts... if I can't get it so it doesn't hurt my wife's back it'll be relegated to daily driving... and that would be just wrong... I only used 1/2 of one tank coming home... about 11 gallons... :) If 23.75 mpg is the mileage, I've got a 950 mile range... :) Mileage might be better if I wasn't carrying 40 gallons of fuel too... and stopping and going... we made at least 4 stops on the way up... and did some driving in Portland before heading up.
