But AFAIK the '82 and '85 were the same system (vertical buttons was old system, horizontal buttons is new system, so let me know which your '82 has) and honestly, I don't know why you didn't just fix the ACC in the '85 properly. I have one of them in my '84 and one in my '87, and I actually like them. They work well. Then you'll have a nice diesel classic to sell to me! (After all, by the time you get the drivetrain in and functional, it'll be 2016! I know I'll be able to afford it by then! Ha!) The '85 is parked in Fresno, and when it gets hot there, the AC is really barely adequate - I saw no value to having a system that could crank it down :). Also, the Fresno car is a bit of an abortion - it's an 85 chassis with the engine from a 1981 300TD installed in it. All the computer controls are disconnected, and various bodges were made to get everything hooked up. Not by me, mind you. I actually did quite a bit to get it back to stock for an '82 or so. I used the radio antenna switch to turn the AC compressor on & off. I removed a light that somebody had added for an alarm, and put a little toggle switch in that hole for the center vents. So I didn't make any new holes. The '82 is actually a nicer car. It belonged to my real estate broker, she had bought it new in 1982. I bought it from her a year and a half ago. I had to do some relatively minor stuff to it - turned the ALDA a quarter turn CCW to get the engine peppy, rebuilt the drivers seat, replaced a passenger seat motor, put new shocks in it, replaced the A/C compressor and recharged the system.... She was not a mechanic, but she sure did know how to write checks! She had had a rebuilt engine and transmission installed in it a few years previously. The '82 has the same horizontal-button ACC control box as my '85. I'm thinking it's because it's an SD, so had the fanciest available at the time. On the '85, I did pull the control box out and resolder all the connections. Made a definite difference - I think there was a vacuum leak in it somewhere though. - Jerry I have one of them in my '84 and > one in my '87, and I actually like them. Ours was dark blue below the belt, white roof. The blue was a bit purpled by the time I remember it. Simply the most comfortable car ever built. The armrest was so big, my father added a belt and turned it into a child seat for me. The reason the engine is gone is that they were the first cars to have the Hemi..in 331 cu in form, but easily buildable into a race engine. In '53, Briggs Cunningham was still racing this motor at Le Mans. When ours finally died in 1964, my brother pulled the radio and built a 12V power supply so he could play it at home. There's never been a better sounding radio. Now, you may say, but it has a clutch pedal! That's right, the first Chrysler automatics had clutches! In order to initially get the car into gear, you would use the clutch. Once "Drive" was engaged, it would automatically shift, like a modern car.
