It firms up after pumping, but with foot on brake the pedal slowly goes to the floor. I tried bleeding with Mity-Vac, but I couldn't seem to suck fluid out of the right rear valve. So I bought the eezibleed system based on George Murphy's recommendation. Problem: When pressure testing (with the recommended 20 psi), I got fluid/air spraying out of rear test button on the fluid reservoir. Questions: 1. Could this be the cause of the spongy pedal? 2. Most of these older test buttons show the rubber cracking around the edges, but afaik have not caused any problems. Should these be replaced when cracked? Are they a replacement item (without a new reservoir)? Anyone have any experience with problems like this when doing a pressure bleed? TIA for any help you can provide! (this is how midas almost caused me to wipe out a line of small cars... had a "free" brake inspection on a '67 Wagoneer... they quoted me $600 (in 1988... my mechanic charged $150), I told them to put it back together, not interested... shortly afterward I realized that the pedal was travelling a lot further than before and then lost brakes all together... they didn't put the drum brakes back to the same adjustment as they had been before pulling the drums to look... that extra travel caused the master cylinder to fail... luckily for those cars ahead of me at the bottom of that hill there was a shoulder and it was a manual transmission...) ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold SAVE fuel: use synthetics: http://www.AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 SAVE power: use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf http://wagoneers.com http://gunbanobama.com/ http://freegift.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Wed, 1 Oct 2008, Greg Fiorentino wrote: # I am trying to bleed brakes on my '85 300SD in order to firm up the pedal. # It firms up after pumping, but with foot on brake the pedal slowly goes to # the floor. Hi Gang - I have been pretty quiet lately on the list - summer was crazy busy at work and all that good stuff. But I assure you I have been keeping up with all the Monster Carport antics and other ramblings! I have a little problem with my '91 300D. Normally I drive this car a short distance back and fourth to work and it has been very reliable. Two weeks ago, I took it on a trip from Rhode Island to northern New York to attend a college job fair. On the trip up, I pulled into a rest area and noticed that it was running a little rough. Revved it a few times, shut down, hit the rest room, and took off. All was well the rest of the trip up. On the way back, I noticed a really funny shift at Sevey's Corners which is about 45 miles into the 375 mile trip home. No worries, keep going. About 10 miles later it dead peddled! Now mind you, if you look on the map, Sevey's Corners is just north of the Adirondack forest - the middle of nowhere - and it's 9:30 PM already. So I coasted a bit and then it came back to life - and I drove on. During the rest of the trip it dead peddled about four more times - one time it never recovered and I coasted to the side of the road. Trying to start it just produced a really rough idle and lots of smoke out the pipe. Finally after a few tries it lit back up and I motored on. I ended up getting home at about 3 AM safely, but what a ride. The car has not exhibited the symptoms since, but I only drive it 11 miles each way to work each day for the most part. I drove it 180 today and it never dead peddled, but it didn't feel quite right a few times - a feeling I remember vividly at midnight on the Mass Pike. So here is what I have ruled out - Fuel and fuel filters are fine and unlikely culprits because the problem is so intermittent. Vacuum system seems fine in the driveway with the gauge on it. Possibilities - IP on the way out, bad injectors, sensors and other control devices. Any other thoughts? Thanks, Fred ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Oct 2008 17:53:49 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: [db] Benz likes to quit! I'm thinking filter... or a lift pump... a bad injector would stay bad, same with the IP. a filter can unclog depending on pressure... check to see if there is water in the fuel... also, what's controlling the shut off? it's vacuum... right?
