New Law Authorizes Veterans' Salutes during National Anthem October 30, 2008 WASHINGTON -- Veterans and active-duty military not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem, thanks to changes in federal law that took effect this month. 'The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who have served in our nation's armed forces,' said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. 'This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation's flag.' The new provision improves upon a little known change in federal law last year that authorized veterans to render the military-style hand salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, but it did not address salutes during the national anthem. Last year's provision also applied to members of the armed forces while not in uniform. Traditionally, members of the nation.s veterans service organizations have rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag while wearing their organization's official head-gear. The most recent change, authorizing hand-salutes during the national anthem by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel, was sponsored by Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, an Army veteran. It was included in the Defense Authorization Act of 2009, which President Bush signed on Oct. 14. The earlier provision authorizing hand-salutes for veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, was contained in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008, which took effect Jan. 28, 2008. # # # from: http://www1.va.gov/opa/pressrel/pressrelease.cfm?id=1609 ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2008 09:26:16 -0500 From: Edward Pomeroy Subject: Re: [db] only remotely diesel related Hey, about the cost of fuel. I just figured that for around town driving, the Jetta at 42 MPG still beats my wife's car that gives 20 MPG even with the 1.75 to 2.75 price differential. The only time wife beats jetta is on highway where she gets 32 versus my 46 with price diff. I think it worked out to about 16 miles per dollar for me and 17 MPD for her on highway. The miles per dollar is a great quick way to compare vehicles on a given tank fillup. john wrote: > yep, sounds like the way they do things... add hardware, no > need in efficient programming... when teaching computer > science classes I always ask if there are any programmers > in class... if someone says the use VB I politely explain > that isn't real programming... assembly, BASIC, Pascal, > C, C++... as soon as you add the word "visual" it's click > and drool... the other irritation with MS stuff is they load > everything in... if you do .not or VB, they load all of the > stuff, not just what you use... after all you're probably not > smart enough to know that you might want that wonderful dancing > puppy dog later on... ;) the dumbing down of IT... argghhh... > > btw, my son's exhaust system sort of fell of his '85 300D today... > he's not real happy about it...
