'86 CJ-10A and '80 J10 for sale... talking to a friend this afternoon and doing a little bit of math I came to the most likely a blatantly obvious realization to most folks... that I was lining up a significant number of engine, axle, transmission and xfr case swaps to build a practical, economical, daily driver that would do it all... when one of the vehicles I already own does all of it, but at about 4 mpg less than what I want... so I did the math and realized that for my 20 mile roundtrip commute on Diesel that 4 mpg less amounts to somewhere between $16 and $48 per month more... I was gonna bust knuckles and strain my back for that? :) Just to get the CJ-10A into a 4x4 mode using the J10 axles I was looking at 32 nuts on 16 u-bolts, 8 brake lines and two brake bleedings, 4 driveshaft R&Rs, at least one drum brake job, who knows how many visits to the chiropractor and $150 to have spring perches welded on... and I don't even know if the 3.3L would push the CJ-10A around with 3.54s after barely moving with 4.88's! and that's just part of the work... then I'd have to take the bed off and build that up... the '94 Blazer, boring as it is... does everything except 20 mpg in town... so... I'm thinking... sell the CJ-10A, fix the '80 J10 and sell, get Superdawg home and build him up over time with 4.10s (one r&p on the front axle), find a 4bt cummins and automatic, sound proof, paint and so on... The 3.3L Nissan Turbo Diesel would probably be a nice addition to the CJ-10A, but do I really want to deal with an engine swap? And the SD-33T wouldn't have enough oomph to really satisfy me... and replacement parts aren't trivial... so reality has struck me upside the head... ;) Any idea what my '86 CJ-10A might be worth? It runs fine, has good tires and the bed was only slightly modified... no rust, glass is good... it's straight... http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/ALL-9Dec2008.html http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/ALL-13-Dec-2008.html I've seen far worse variations of these things on ebay for well over $4500... with Christmas coming I doubt now is a good time to sell... Guess I'll go through this thing and perform maintenance, filters, oil, wipers, clean it up... remove the ballast if it's still there and then try to sell it in a bit... or put it up now and hope for the best. :) The '80 J10 will get reassembled and running... I really don't want to deal with axle swaps and don't want to use a 4.2L in my '83 Stepside... will drive it until it sells I guess... Reality is a good thing... it takes grand plans and ideas, exercises them and then scales them way back... maybe that's why I'm not as frightened by the outcome of the election as I should be... reality will slow down even the most radical agendas... :) Guess my '94 Blazer will finally get the other WJ seat installed, the new stereo and a quieter muffler... it passed the Snohomish Snowy Hill Climb test today... it has an inferior 4x4 system to any Jeep, but it works, and best of all it's a Diesel. :) more snow pictures coming... http://wagoneers.com/fotos/2008 look for the latest dates... was sitting in the parking lot at the mall near an icy patch, got a lot of pictures of folks taking spills... thankfully no one was hurt... more snow falling tonight... looking forward to rain so I can work on my Jeeps. :) johh ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Dec 2008 12:27:05 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: [db] Re: [CJ-10List] Re: reality check... '86 CJ-10A and '80 J10 for sale... the problem is I have too many projects going on right now... and my son has several as well... the blazer is a nice vehicle but amazingly boring... fit and finish is worse than jeep if you can imagine that. but it's got a solid engine... and functioning a/c and cruise. ;) and one can recline the seats... I'm still trying to figure out how to make an extended cab J10 stepside with short wheel base... I haven't given up on the tug completely... was encouraged by talking to the local high-priced 4x4 /wrecking yard... I'm thinking if I put a regular CJ tub on the tug, kept the front end and axle swap that it might work... not sure I want to use the Nissan TD though, would rather get a better performing engine with parts availability... selling any of my rigs right now isn't much of an option, no nibbles on anything... so I keep moving forward... one thing you'll notice about me as these projects progress is that I will change direction rapidly based upon available resources in parts, skills and labor... or other rigs... it's an absolute adventure, and the guys on the other lists I started (DieselBenz, FSJ and XJ) often follow along while munching on popcorn... I provide countless hours of entertainment, dreams and fotos, many are able to live vicariously through my lunacy. :) I almost always buy at bargain prices, make improvements and find the projects or parts good homes and cover my costs. So while I may have a fortune invested, I always seem to recover it and have some left over for the next adventure. :) well, heading out into the latest Seattle snow storm, my wife feels she needs to go shopping...
