Hadn't been there for maybe three months. My trusty 85 300D was in fairly sad shape. The car was covered in dirt. Tires were flat, battery was weak, and the brake reservoir was empty. There was a stain on the ground at the left front tire. I started the car with a battery box, pumped up the tires with a 12V pump, poured the reservoir full of DOT4, bled the front brakes, and drove away. Now I'll need to go back down there and fix the brakes for real. It's like working on a desert island or in outer space. Everything has to be brought in. No quickie trips to the parts store. I can reasonably spend one day on the project. A two hour trip in, work on the car for maybe six hours, and then a two hour trip home. The chief challenge is infrastructure and staging. I figure I'll go down there with * Two rebuilt front brake calipers. I don't know whether they're Bendix or ATE or Girling, so I'll just replace both. If it was at home, I would probably try rebuilding them, but not out on the dirty ramp of a far away airport! * A set of new front brake hoses. * A set of new brake shoes and sensors * A couple cans of Brakleen * A sheet of plastic to lay under the car and work on * A couple of jackstands. Will lift the car with its own jack * My good old EZ-bleed. My wife will not be there to pump the pedal. * A quart of DOT4 * A plastic drain pan to squirt the bleed fluid into. I hate using little jars etc - they always tip over. * coveralls. * Disposable gloves, paper towels, hand cleaner I already have a reasonable tool kit in the back of the car - I think I'm well set up with basic hand tools. And there's a pretty deluxe tool kit that rides around with the plane. But that one is all SAE. - Jerry Kaidor ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2009 22:34:27 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] 300D Brakes sounds like a good plan... you might want to invest in a good set of tools and spares to keep in the benz, and perhaps a car cover. recommend using synthethic lubricants throughout, that'll help things a bit as well... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Tue, 6 Jan 2009, Jerry Kaidor wrote: # Hi folks, # # Flew down to Fresno yesterday. I used to run Mobile 1 in the 300D, but stopped because it made no difference to oil change intervals because of the carbon products in the oil. But for a car that mostly sits - and far away - synthetic makes a lot of sense. Maybe even DOT5 brake fluid.
