I've bought complete vehicles that I drove home for less... :) at least I know that the '91 300D and the '99 WJ will be around, trying to decide on the 3rd vehicle... which may completely go away anyway... getting my wife to give up the WJ or the 300D is next to impossible... she won't drive the Blazer, or the J10, or the 300GD, or anything that is "red neck", manual or "too big". :) hmmm... an automatic Mercedes Diesel powered Jeep Cherokee might work... anyone interested in a partially assembled Jeep J10 stepside? ;) later, john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jan 2009 16:33:35 -0600 From: "Alec Cordova" Subject: Re: [db] popcorn adventures I'm starting to think the vast majority of the diesel G-wagens that made it to the US used the non-turbo engines. I know the 280GE of the 80's that used the straight 6 gasser was detuned compared to that engine in the sedans. This could really affect their use as all purpose daily drivers. And if you're going to retrofit an MB turbodiesel into a vehicle anyway, you might as well put it into a Jeep just to satisfy that side of you. I would think one of the nice gussied-up 4-door XJ Cherokees with an inline 5 or 6 cylinder MB turbodiesel would probably make the best daily driver. An older FSJ is probably too big and heavy for these engines, and if you want a WJ, just find a way to get a euro model with the V6 TD where all the integration work is nicely done for you. That just leaves adapting the Benz engine, possibly with MB tranny, to four wheel drive. Importing a WJ isn't cost effective and there are other issues with a WJ, mainly size and visibility, the XJ is perferred. Building up a nice Cherokee (XJ) with a Mercedes Diesel does sound like a good project...
