California does have the highest density of cars, doesn't it? Combined with the geography that can trap things in the air in certain regions, shouldn't they be allowed to try to keep the air in their major cities clean enough to at least see through? While the federal standards are plenty sufficient for central Texas, one has to admit that parts of southern California or Massachusetts have a different challenge keeping their air clean enough. I know this has seriously contributed to our lack of access to recent diesels, but I'm still mixed about it. And everybody knows we are not going to end up with 51 different standards (one for each state plus one set of federal). We have two: Federal, and California. Cali spends money arriving at the standards they want, and the other states that want stricter standards just use the California set without spending their own money to come up with another set. It's been this way in the US since the 70s, hasn't it? We all know about Trap Oxidizers on 1985 California emissions MB diesels. I mean if it doesn't sell why just let a nice Diesel engine just sit there? right? :) I'm not going to drive the tug around, and have no motivation to extend the frame or make it into a 4x4... the '94 K1500 6.5L TD Blazer is doing fine until my '83 J10 stepside is done... so I started looking at dead Jeep Cherokees... found a decent '97 XJ and a '99 WJ that are around $2k... looked at the '97 XJ last night... the engine had been hydrolocked and has internal noise... the '99 wj has a cracked block, guess the owner didn't realize that even here we should use antifreeze... (just another sign of global warming when the locals learn about antifreeze...) so... I'm thinking that if I pulled the 3.3L Diesel out of the CJ-10A complete and dropped it in the XJ, provided of course that it would fit, which it most likely will... guess that depends on the length of the Torqueflite 727 compared to the Aisin-Warner 30-80LE (or AW4) in the XJ... xfr cases are the same size, engines about the same... the 4.0/aw4 and xfr case would then go into the cj-10a, or sold with it, some assembly required... would be a good swap, and the 4.0 shouldn't take too much to replace, saw a couple used ones for around $400... the xj weighs around 3,400lbs... the cj-10a weighed over 6,000lbs and after the ballast and bumpers removed still around 4,800lbs... and the 3.3L seemed to move it ok after the diet... Anyway, just looking for comments... encouragement or the usual humorous remarks about my sanity while you are munching on popcorn... :) Current plan for the fleet is still the '99 WJ, the '91 300D and the '83 J10 stepside, but a Diesel powered XJ would still be a nice daily driver and might replace one of the other vehicles... in the meantime the Diesel Blazer will fill the role of the stepside, who knows how long before the axles and engine are swapped from the '80 to the '83... :) enjoy your popcorn... going back to look at the '97 XJ on Saturday with a tape measure and maybe the cj-10a to do a direct comparison... weather and spouse permitting... we can only hope the interested party will buy the cj-10a before the monster carport swallows it and spits out another frankenjeep(s)... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2009 19:17:49 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: [db] heat up the popcorn in the early stages of setting up a swap... this: http://wagoneers.com/tmp/sam/ for this: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/Jan_10_2009_cj-10a/ALL.html the sami will come with some cash to go toward a TDI swap... it has toyota axles, 4.56:1, currently on 33x13s this little sami might be fun, especially with the wider, heavier toyota axles... thinking I'd use 235's to get the thing more in the daily driver mode... the TDI swap would be a must... or am I kidding myself and I should just sell the CJ-10A and stick with real vehicles? :) ...just munching on popcorn and considering options... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jan 2009 10:03:38 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] popcorn update popcorn topic: trade '86 cj-10a for samurai lifted/locked (comes with cash for the TDI conversion... that's run about $700 for engine, $600 for adapter) - ---------------------------------------------------------- prevailing wisdom is to RUN away from the samarui... my buddies in australia, wisconsin, washington and ohio all are saying the same thing... only two friends, so far, both hard core wheeling types, think it's a good idea... my son took one look at the pictures and said, "that's a trail rig, you don't do trails, you haven't done trails for years, what are you thinking?" :) best advice so far is to continue the idea of transplanting the 3.3L Diesel / tf727 into an XJ. This idea makes sense as I could swap a 4.0L into (or include with) the cj-10a and keep it saleable. weather and time permitting will measure xj and cj-10a on saturday to determine swap viability... stay tuned... keep that popcorn buttered and warm... adventures with Diesels continues... john -o|||||o- 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) 4.7L V8/45RFE/NV247 1991 Mercedes 300D (124) 2.5L Turbo Diesel/AT (Shadowfax) 1983 Jeep J10 Stepside (SJ) 4.2/T-5/NP208 (Superdawg) 1975 Jeep J10 long bed (SJ) hydraulic dump trailer 1980 Jeep J10 Shortbox (SJ) 4.2/T-18/NP208 - donor for Superdawg 1986 CJ-10A 3.3L Diesel/AT - for sale $4500 1994 Chevrolet Blazer (K1500) 6.5L Turbo Diesel/AT - for sale $4999 1967 Jeep J100 (SJ)Panel 232/T-85/D20 - for sale $2999 -o|||||o- http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://johnmeister.com/fotomeister - Trust Jesus: http://freegift.com SAVE power, avoid viruses, use LINUX: http://johnmeister.com/tmcp.pdf SAVE fuel, use synthetics: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #2982 **********************************
