It was a beautifully simple process, without anything sophisticated to try to figure out. It's done from underneath. BUT, there's some brackets for lines and wires that have to be moved out of the way first (not too bad a project) AND the flare nut that held the line in the output port was a) highly stuck and b) BRASS! I tried hard to get it out, but first the corners broke off with the flare nut wrench, then I tried vise-grips and just shaved more metal off of it, and ultimately I gave up and cut the line right at the nut just to get the thing out. That's one of only four things connected to that pump; the other three are a rubber input hose and 2 bolts. If the flare nut comes out like it should, it's a simple process. If not, it will take a long time. In my case, it took virtually all day. Once the pump was out, I had to free the output line from the front of the motor, which meant removing the alternator tensioning bracket, a steel heat line, and something else I can't remember, because it was trapped behind them. Once I took the line to a local shop to have them put a new flare/fitting on the line, it all went back together pretty well. As for that flare nut, though, once I had the pump out, I had to know just how much force would be required to get that thing out. I had to use my Irwin damaged nut remover socket to get a grip on it, stand on the pump, and reef on it like a stubborn lug nut to get it out. There's no way I was ever going to get it out without cutting the line like I did. The owner of the shop I had redo the line said that the brass nut was probably aftermarket, but I don't really think so, because the line showed no signs of having ever been modified. But perhaps I was the second person to change the fuel pump, and the first cut it off and re-flared it too. In my case, there wasn't enough meat left before the first bend, so he made me a new first bend and unioned it after that. I still haven't gotten it to start yet, since the fuel filter still hasn't refilled. If I don't get it soon, I'm going to go get my topsider and jury-rig it to that tire valve and use a long-stroke manual fuel pump on it for a bit, cuz it takes a lot of cranking to do it with the lift pump, and I'm getting really tired of being stuck at my friend's house. I have been stuck here for 2 days already. YUCK! I love him to death, but I have things I need to do that involve being able to go places! In short, what a hateful project that turned out to be!
