(had to do some "homework" last night, didn't get to the wrenching...) speaking of the homework, might be in SoCal first week of March teaching a class if anyone is down in Orange County... will take a quick trip up to Canyon Country to visit my uncle. Not sure how much time I'll have, only teaching a 3 day class... fwiw, the panel is for sale... on craigslist, may put it on ebay... can't keep too many vehicles here, the garden season has started and my wife needs to be able to get around the place with the wheelbarrow, or I find piles of dead plants in front of my carport... :) make an offer, you might get lucky... http://fotomeister.us/fotos/2009/02-Feb-11-snow-commute-llamas-sunrises/JEM_6293.jpg got a nice picture of an eagle taking a lunch break while working from home today: http://fotomeister.us/fotos/2009/02-Feb-19-eagles-n-llamas/ALL.html these pictures were taken about 350 feet away... used a 500mm reflex on my D300. wrench time... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Feb 2009 21:20:16 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: [db] brakes / starter - project progress ok, had planned to do this last night... but got it all done tonight. :) Got the rear calipers swapped out on the '99 WJ: http://wagoneers.com/WJ/tech/WJ-rear-calipers-1999-feb2009/ALL.html Last Sunday the left rear rotor was smoking... the caliper seized... pulled the starter off of the '86 CJ-10A: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/2009_Feb_19_starter/ anyone recognize this starter? Will carry it to a few places tomorrow, hopefully get it going this weekend... :) Mark pulled the nerf bars off of the '85 GW today since he's keeping, it... I found another set of 3.31 axles for the tug. Actually a set of 2.72s as well... But considering that it would cost about $1200 to convert the axles to 4.10s, I think the 3.31s will be ok with 235s... I hope. Here's the excel info for the axles... the 3.3L Diesel seems quite happy around 2,200 lbs... was able to hold that speed up the hill with the full ballast. Without the ballast it was able to hold 50 mph with about the same effort. If I've got this figured out correctly it should be able to cruise at 60mph and even do 70mph... which is not something I'll be trying to do. 235s 31" RPM 3.31: 4.88: - --------------------- 2200 57.11 40.70 2250 58.40 41.63 2300 59.70 42.56 2350 61.00 43.48 2400 62.30 44.41 2450 63.59 45.33 2500 64.89 46.26 2550 66.19 47.18 2600 67.49 48.11 2650 68.79 49.03 2700 70.08 49.96 2750 71.38 50.88 Oh yeah, saw an eagle out my office window today: http://fotomeister.us/fotos/2009/02-Feb-19-eagles-n-llamas/ALL.html the bird was about 350 feet or more away... 500mm f8 reflex, nikon d300. later, john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Feb 2009 06:13:55 -0800 (PST) From: Jim Hoffman Subject: Re: [db] brakes / starter - project progress So, I don't see the pics of the new rotors! ;) Jim > Got the rear calipers swapped out on the '99 WJ: > http://wagoneers.com/WJ/tech/WJ-rear-calipers-1999-feb2009LL.html > Last Sunday the left rear rotor was smoking... the caliper seized... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Feb 2009 14:57:02 -0800 From: john Subject: [db] Re: [CJ-10List] starter - update '86 cj-10a starter update... 1) the starter tested good... suspect is the wiring going to the starter, a couple friends suggested this (you were right jim)... my son also... what was weird is that banging the starter got it working... the shop explained why that worked... I won't. :) 2) turns out that I wasn't looking for Lake Serene Auto Electric... not Lynnwood Auto Electric, but the guy I was thinking of DID retire... Pat. But there is a guy named Larry at Lynnwood who bought Pat out and has carried on.... right across from Fleury's on SR99. He tested it for free, pulled it apart and noted it looks brand new inside... even drew up a schematic for me to put in a relay to help the ignition switch... His prices were the same as the shop that Jim Startup recommended in Everett... which was way out of my way... So, I'm going to reinstall and do some rewiring on the Cj-10a... going to add a number of switches and modified wiring to increase security. :) Need to get broadform insurance, a couple of switches and my allergy shots on the way home... dang if I didn't leave my coffee cup at home... need a cup of coffee... way too wound up today... ;) Need to swing by a starbucks on the way to the allergist. ;) ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Feb 2009 21:55:49 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: [db] saturday adventures put the starter back in the cj-10a, haven't connected up the wiring, need to check the starter wire first... not sure if I'm going to add a relay to the stock wiring to help it, or run another switch... took one of my full size jeep brush guards and it fits the cj-10a... just need to figure out how to mount it to the front, no bumpers, need a couple large L brackets. :) got my son's '85 GW (the original axle donor) working in 4wd today, it was a vacuum issue... trying to get him to replace all the vac lines in it... anyway, crawled underneath and the vacuum motor was trying to engage... so we pulled the clip and manually engaged 4wd... it's a 229 so it's full-time capable... (found another set of GW axles, they'll be coming next weekend...) Made a topsoil/compost run with the WJ and trailer... 2 yards of topsoil in the '75 J10 hydraulic dump trailer, actually came out when dumped! then 1 yard of topsoil in the back, it also came out. Then I wired up my trailer for the barrel lift and ran out and picked up two barrels of WVO with it... unhitched it in the drive so chuck can come by next week and run the barrels up to his place. it's 9:30... I think I'm going to run out and wire up my starter... :) it's still 50 degrees outside... here's a few pictures... http://fotomeister.us/fotos/2009/02-Feb-21-JeepDay/ john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3006 **********************************
