At least I've got all the vehicles here running. john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2009 04:41:26 -0500 From: Steve Morelen Subject: RE: [db] Rear wheel bearings on a W123? The job is not rocket science, just laborious... The half shaft has to pulled out of the wheel hub assy and to do this you might have to disconnect the differential from the subframe assy. I don't remember if the half shaft has to be completely removed to provide working access to the inner side of the wheel assy. When I did mine I was replacing half-shafts so the shafts came out by default. If half-shaft removal is necessary, the differential back cover has to be removed to allow removal of a c-clip that secures the inner end of the half-shaft to the differential. There is a slotted nut on the inner side of the wheel assy that must be removed using a special tool and reinstallation of this nut requires application of a lot of torque because a crush ring (non-reusable part) inside the wheel hub is being deformed to provide a specific amount of end-play for the re-assembled hub assy. This end-play must be measured using a dial indicator. This is basically grunt work and might take a trained and equipped shop 2 or 3 hours per side. (un-educated guess) I did not have to replace my bearings...the seals were no longer working and needed replacement...leaking bearing lube had made a mess in the parking brake assy area. The bearings looked fine...just needed some fresh grease. My car was 23 years old and had 250 kmiles on it when I did this work. They were trying to shape each others mouths with their hands to get the correct pronunciation... Had a similar experience (sans hands) with a Korean friend in trying to help him say the word "sealing". He kept adding a "ch" sound to the "s". Sounded like he was saying "shilling". I'm probably the last person on the planet to teach any language, my own kids mock my midwestern/Chicago accent. ;) And what I do to foreign languages is beyond despair... ;) Anyway, it reminded me of that commercial. I searched on youtube but obviously am putting in the wrong search criteria. I'm pretty sure it was early to mid-80s... would be grateful if someone with better search engine skills than me could find it. :) thanx, john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Feb 2009 21:08:18 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: [db] road test just took the cj-10a out for a quick road test... one thing I'm starting to notice, 4.88 gears just don't let this thing loose... :) it's screaming at 45 to 50 mph... with the ballast and bumpers gone it is much more responsive... I'm confident the GW axles with 3.31s will make this thing "normal". I might drive it to work tomorrow and get it emissions tested... john http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/2009_Feb_22_brushguard/ ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2009 10:30:36 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: [db] first commute in cj-10a http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/2009_Feb_23_first_commute-compare-TJ/ made it to work! not a bad ride at all... 50 Deg F, sunny... rough stretches of road were "interesting". The "new" GW axles arrive Saturday with 3.31s, will use GW springs and decent tires, that will make it a lot nicer. Biggest delay will be getting the correct driveshafts and a lever for the NP208. I believe these tires to be the original ones... with only 39,000 miles on the tug it's not unlikely... :) The 3.31's will almost make this thing road worthy... 45 mph seemed like the engine was screaming... only about 2450 rpm... guess that's a lot for a forklift motor that weighs 672 lbs. :) MPH/w gears: RPM 4.88s 3.31s 2450 45.33 63.59 Put the FSJ brushguard on last night: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/2009_Feb_22_brushguard/ looking for the front turn/park lights, and need to figure out what to do with the box... removed the 1,210lb ballast and the very heavy bumpers, that helped a lot. john -o|||||o- 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ) 15 mpg 4.7L V8/45RFE/NV247 1991 Mercedes 300D (124) 29 mpg 2.5L Turbo Diesel/AT (Shadowfax) 1986 CJ-10A ? 3.3L Diesel/tf727/NP208 1983 Jeep J10 Stepside (SJ) 14 mpg 4.2/T-5/NP208 (Superdawg) 1975 Jeep J10 long bed (SJ) hydraulic dump trailer 1967 Jeep J100 (SJ)Panel 232/T-85/D20 - for sale - $1900 -o|||||o- http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3007 **********************************
