The ballast used to be under it... then from there back about 28" is the bed that sits over the fuel tank. I've looked at the pictures and am trying to decide if I want to cut and reweld fuel tank mounts and move them forward so I can slide a barrel between the frame rails in back... or if I just want to lift it up to the main deck... I have a tool box that will sit nicely on the 19" wide front part... if I cut the back wall off the box and mount a reciever hitch on the back I can use my barrel lift to get the barrels up to the 28" long deck over the fuel tank... it's heavy steel, no problem with weight... my concern is the barrel of oil will be sitting up pretty high at that point. I can strap it down... Another option is to notch the bed in the back far enough to get a barrel pushed up against the fuel tank and maybe hanging off the back a bit... that will keep the weight low. john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Feb 2009 10:04:38 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: [db] Re: [CJ-10List] Re: box ideas On Thu, 26 Feb 2009, Dave Bell wrote: # Have you considered mounting the gas tank down low between the frame # rails behind the axle--like on an old Commando or CJ5? That's what we # had hoped to trying on ours. But you are quite a bit farther along # than we are, so you may have already eliminated this idea. We were # hoping to drop all of the extra mounting "tabs" from the ballast and # original tank and then re-mount the tank between the frame rails to # allow a full bed like off of an old 1/4 ton ww2 trailer. # # Dave Bell I like your idea... actually thinking of putting the tank under the frame forward of the axle... that way I can drop the bed lower behind the axle to allow barrels to stand upright, but low... a full barrel of WVO will weigh around 450lbs, give or take a bit, depending on how many french fries ended up in the mix. ;) Another friend suggested flipping the tank up on it's side, but that would require replumbing... there is that dead space under where the ballast was... thought about wacking off the tabs for the ballast, but those are the bed supports. I was planning on using the existing bed, but it's got a lot of dips and doodles and weighs a lot... putting the tank down low and notching part of the sides/back of the box to allow barrels to sit low. The distance between the spring perches is 39"... frame sits in of that about 6" or so... leaving me about 27" or so between the rails (give or take, estimating at this point), a barrel is 24", so I could get one barrel in that "notch". If I lift the barrels up, I can easily put two side by side... usually I run two barrels up to my friend's biodiesel still... over 30 miles one way, don't want to make two trips. I may be buying a complete grand wagoneer instead of axles this weekend... found one for a couple hundred more than the axles... anyway, I may use part of the floor in the back... ;) or not... It may be another nice GW and I don't want to destroy one for a few parts... I could use plywood, but it'll get really slimy in this climate, and add WVO and Biodiesel to that and I'll hurt myself. Taking this thing down to frame height and building a flat platform might be better... lower CG... easier access... hanging the tank, or using one from the GW or maybe, a 40 gal tank from a Suburban a friend and I will be parting out... :) Anyone have a 4x5 sheet of diamond plating they don't have a use for? :) have torch and welder... and big hammers... pretty much a blank canvas that is about 4 feet by 5 feet... :) Maybe I'll start off by cutting off the fenders and parts of the side and back and seeing what I have left... no one in their right mind would want a 7' wide box for anything... so wacking the fenders off will leave it more useful, and probably a bit lighter too... I think if a small car hit one of those fenders it would be ripped to shreds... not sure why they used such heavy steel... I guess they were trying to add weight. this will be fun... :) but first, axles, driveshafts and making it go... then I'll be creative... looking forward to driving this thing... enjoyed it's maiden voyage to work... it's unique, sits up high in traffic, and even with the heavy springs rode decently... love the sound of that little Diesel, it's such a happy little engine... :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ # # --- In CJ-10List-at-yahoogroups.com, diesel john wrote: # > # > # http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/2008_Dec_29_bed_n_ballast_removal/ALL.html # > # > looking at the frame with the box off and trying to decide how to # modify it when I # > swap axles... # > # > a barrel is 24" in diameter and about 35" tall. # > # > the bed is 5' wide, has a 19" section in front that sits down 3.5" # below the main deck. # > The ballast used to be under it... then from there back about 28" is # the bed that # > sits over the fuel tank. # > # > I've looked at the pictures and am trying to decide if I want to cut # and reweld # > fuel tank mounts and move them forward so I can slide a barrel # between the # > frame rails in back... or if I just want to lift it up to the main # deck... # > # > I have a tool box that will sit nicely on the 19" wide front part... if # > I cut the back wall off the box and mount a reciever hitch on the back # > I can use my barrel lift to get the barrels up to the 28" long deck over # > the fuel tank... it's heavy steel, no problem with weight... my # > concern is the barrel of oil will be sitting up pretty high at that # point. # > I can strap it down... # > # > Another option is to notch the bed in the back far enough to get a # barrel # > pushed up against the fuel tank and maybe hanging off the back a # bit... that # > will keep the weight low. # > # > john # > # > # > # > # > ----- # > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ # > Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold # > http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org # > http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us # > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ # > # # # ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Feb 2009 20:45:26 -0800 (PST) From: diesel john Subject: [db] project funding activity need funds for project (and popcorn) ... put '67 J100 Panel on ebay... :) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160318497884 bid early, bid often... the project you fund may cost you in popcorn... :) hoping to get axles under the '86 CJ-10A this weekend... also need to change the fuel filter(s), drove it to dinner tonight and barely made it home... 25 mph up some of the hills... barely 35 down the clearview hill. :) ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3009 **********************************
