I hope it's the latter... they had to fabricate a new parking brake setup... need to change the speedo gears...not sure how fast I was going, but when I stayed on the throttle the rest of traffic got smaller in the mirrors, that's a good sign. Didn't have a lot of room to let it unwind because of construction in the valley, going up the clearview hill slowed me down because of the brakes and the filter... Didn't feel drastly different speed wise, just quieter. The speedo only went up to 40mph, but I'm sure I was going MUCH faster than that... if the speedo was correct before with 4.88's and 31s, what's the delta with 3.31s and 29s? (I'll do the math later and start counting teeth on the gear) The ride wasn't as improved as I would have hoped for, bumps still were somewhat abrupt, but more bouncy than bone shattering. Handled well, felt very nimble and agile, no tippiness... well, you'd expect stability considering it's a Grand Wagoneer frame and axles just shortened up a bit. Wheelbase is about 97" now, a GW is 108", so it's only 11" shorter in WB than a GW... should be pretty stable then... still don't have it functioning in 4wd, they couldn't find a lever for it, and we're not sure what's going on with the internals, thinking it's 2wd high and 4wd low only... don't know, might crawl under it tomorrow. Will probably swap one of my NP208s that are down in Centralia with my J10s... it's snowed here, and more might show up through the weekend... if this thing would have had a lever for 4wd it wouldn't be snowing... any locals have a shifter for an NP208 laying around? :) please, let me borrow it for a bit... :) I left the old axles, tires, wheels and leaf springs at olympic... did a bit of horse trading for driveshafts and such with some of those parts. Just didn't want to deal with all that extra weight and hassle. Cost a lot more than it started out to be but they kept running into issues... the same issues we anticipated when we started so there isn't much surprise there. I'm going to cut up the old rear bumper and use part of the basic frame to cap the end of the frame and weld a receiver hitch on, will leave some of the supports sticking out the back to put the smaller side steps on, home made rear step bumper. I'm not sure what I'm going to use for wheel flares, or if I even need to. The shop thought it was kind of close as far as being legal. Might use TJ flares. Will be cutting a notch out of the back of the bed for the cj-2a tailgate I picked up on Friday. Got a pair of the hinges this morning. Took a picture with it clamped on the back. Hope to work on it tomorrow after church, a friend is bringing his 300E over for some injector work, think I'll have him operate the sawzall while I wrench on his Benz. :) Other than the discouraging find about the brakes, it's coming along nicely. I'm thinking I may use my cloth WJ seats in the cab after seeing another tug with S10 seats installed. Makes more sense to use the extra set of WJ seats than having them sitting around... will still use the leather wj seats in my '83 j10 stepside... This thing is just the right size... a Smart Jeep... if I can get the rest of the mechanicals working and this thing gets decent economy I will have met my objectives. if not, well, y'all know the drill... keep the popcorn fresh folks... :) time change tonight... more daylight in the evenings for working on projects... :) ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Mar 2009 12:28:25 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] snohomish monster carport open house will be out in my shop working this afternoon... locals are welcome to drop by and check out the current fleet... a friend is bringing his gas powered benz over for some work, I'll be out working on my cj-10a if you want to come by and check it out, or even operate some wrenches come on down... drive way is clear... my wife just took the 300D out without trouble... ;) if it does snow more (unlikely since it's sunny) I've got the WJ here for extractions... :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Mar 2009 16:55:42 -0700 (PDT) From: diesel john Subject: [db] need brake help the left brake is hanging, the wheel cylinder is NOT leaking and not frozen, but the shoes aren't retracting properly... http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/2009_Mar_08_brakes_bumper/tug-brakes/ anyone see an issue? jim, or jon, any chance of stopping by and taking a look? working on a custom rear bumper from the remains, http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1986-CJ10A/2009_Mar_08_brakes_bumper/tug-bumper/ john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Mar 2009 21:09:51 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] Re: Old Man Car Manual http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/ interesting... it's down for maintenance, but looks promising... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Sun, 8 Mar 2009, David Ashby wrote: # John, # # # # I just ran across this site while doing some research on the Quadrajet (in case the other engine buyer doesn't need it) # and the guy that wants the carb. wants to know the cfm rating: # # http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/ # # I haven't checked out many links yet, but it looks interesting. # # Dave # # ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Mar 2009 21:23:32 -0700 (PDT) From: diesel john Subject: [db] Re: [CJ-10List] Re: estimated speed with new gears I've got an assortment of plastic gears for NP xfr cases... have swapped gears, trannies and xfr cases around with different tire sizes for awhile... each tooth is about 3%, which worries me since that's a lot of teeth... so your links might actually be needed. :) haven't got that far yet... still sorting out the brakes, need to change the filters... and of course my daughter just got engaged... so much of my wrenching plans were altered today... that and they didn't provide the correct parts for my friend's 300E so he's got to come back tomorrow. GPS, milemarkers and math will get you pretty close... rule of thumb is that each tooth on the plastic gear is 3%, a tire size change is about 3%. My tank looked like (looks actually) it had chocolate milk in it... I was surprised I've gone as far and as fast as I have. :) Suspect some water got in the tank, will swap out the filters soon as possible... as far as cleaning the tank you could use Diesel Fuel Modifier from Amsoil, or a variety of other cleaners... problem is if you have a lot of crud in the tank you'll be clogging filters like crazy... if the tank is really bad and easy to get out, have it cleaned at a radiator shop. I wouldn't mind having a second tank like ours to run straight WVO in, filtered and heated of course... a friend is giving me a 40 gal tank from his suburban, but I'm not sure where it'll go just yet... maybe on it's own little trailer... ;) thanx john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Sun, 8 Mar 2009, Scott MacMoyle wrote: # There are two places on the web to get speedo adaptors: # # http://www.transmissioncenter.net/speedometer_calibration_______va.htm # http://www.speedometershop.com/ratio.html # # I used the second one. they took a little while to ship but it worked OK. No jeep CJ speedometer will ever be as accurate as a GPS though. # # What does your tank look like inside ? Mine was so full of slime I didnt dare use it. Which brings me to my question. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to clean a diesel fuel tank ? I am not using mine because I use the waggy fuel tank in my tug but its a usefull looking tank. It would make a fine aux tank for either the tug or it even fits in the trunk of the mercedes. Anyhow its been standing upside the wall in my garage for a year or so now and the other day it fell over and hit the wifes pontiac solstice. Boy was she cranky. So I better find a good use for it soon or it may go out as srap. # # Scott # # # # # --- In CJ-10List-at-yahoogroups.com, david-at-... wrote: # > # > On Sat, 7 Mar 2009, diesel john wrote: # > # > > Looking at the RPM range and speedo reading on the tug, # > > I'm guessing that the indicated speed of 40mph was actually # > > about 57 mph...
