I've been thinking the same thing. My two '83 300s both have issues that have not been fixed even though I've paid to have them fixed. The 300TD has a transmission fluid leak where I need to add a quart a week. I was charged to fix it but it wasn't. My 300D Turbo sedan had the driveshaft center support bearing replaced where the guy didn't keep the alignment. He tried to fix it by replacing the flex joints but that, obviously, didn't do it. I've been looking at diesel Jettas and Passats. A Golf would be fine too. I will follow up to get my vehicle fixed but it seems that I cannot find a good, competent, mechanic in my area. Computer tweak: * Dual monitor switching: I've gotten spoiled - my Windows PC has a dual-head card and drives two big LCD monitors. But I want to play with my linux box too. With two monitors, please. So I looked for two-monitor KVM switches - Yikes, they're expensive! Looks like one to do what I want would cost just shy of $300. But wait: each monitor has multiple inputs. So I hooked one input of each monitor to this computer, the other to THAT computer, hooked up my cheap one-monitor KVM to switch the keyboard and mouse - whups, the mouse doesn't switch right, wound up with two mice. So to switch computers, I hit scrollock - scrollock -up arrow to hit the KVM, and then hit the source switch on each monitor - still sure would be nice to have that multi-monitor switch! Car tweak: * My wife's moneypit^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^HJaguar has been showing low oil pressure. I mean - like 5 PSI at idle, max 18 PSI. I pulled the pan to take a look. First instruction: "remove front suspension". Yuck. The pan was full of bits of copper - found a few pieces as long as a half an inch. These were bits of the copper layer of one of the main bearings. Wound up doing a "ghetto rebuild" - replaced the main and big end bearings without removing the crank. Secret? Make Sure You Loosen All the Belts! Otherwise they hold the crank so tight up against the block that you can't sneak in those front bearings. The oil pressure is now 50PSI, much better. Car tweak #2: * When I got the jag running, it started losing power steering fluid. Turned out to be the pinion seal. This is the seal for the shaft that you actually bolt the steering wheel to. I had the bright idea to unbolt the pinion housing without removing the box. Maybe not so bright. Sucker leaked like a sieve when I got it back together. Pumped half the fluid onto the garage floor. Guess I have to take the box out and carefully assemble it on the bench. OTOH, a rebuilt steering box with a 3-year warranty is just $275 on Ebay.... - Jerry Kaidor ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jul 2009 20:43:54 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: [db] OT: Computer and Car Tweaks my toughbook cf-t5 will display 1024x768 on it's 12" lcd display and pump out 1600x1200 on my 19" lcd... although I mainly use just the lcd screen...
