If the doors were intended to be removed by the manufacturer then the manufacturer through other means has made the vehicle crash/crush resistant - as doors and door frames are intended to do. If the doors are sitting on pins and can be lifted off there is no way they are going to stay put in an accident, therefore offering little or no real crash protection. any vehicle where the manufacturer has designed the doors to be removed easily has provided crash protection by other means... If you have a CJ or even a YJ that has doors that can be lifted off, the vehicle was designed to be sturdy enough to be driven WITHOUT Doors and therefore in WA state you are completely legal to drive without them. I would think that even the new Wranglers would qualify as the tub is about the same as the older CJs. If your doors have hinges that don't permit the doors to come off, then probably it's part of the vehicle integrity and you will reduce crash worthiness by removing them. I've seen a few XJ's setup this way... that would violate vehicle integrity and would be illegal. so, we have the definitive answer from a recognized legal authority... driving without doors on my cj-10a is NOT illegal. john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Aug 2009 21:35:15 -0700 (PDT) From: diesel john Subject: [db] another Diesel conversion thinking about doing some minor engine swaps in my shop... have a gas welder/generator, a Power Arc 4000 and a Diesel generator, a DG4LE both are around 4KW... the question is whether I can take the Diesel engine and mount it on the Power Arc 4000 welder/gen setup. Personally, I'd think twice before messing it up. I've been messing with TIG welding for the past few years. Got a Miller Maxstar 150STL - this is a really tiny TIG torch - does 100% duty cycle at 100A. Got it because (excuse to buy tools follows) my 300SD had a cracked door post at the upper driver-side door hinge. I was afraid my gas torch would just put too much heat in - set the car on fire or something. The Maxstar is inverter-based. So there is no big power transformer. And it weighs next to nothing. I had some need of remote welding capability at my apartment complex in Fresno. There is often need of weld repair on the gates. And it can be hard to get welding people out there to do small repairs. There is 110VAC available at the gate controllers, but it is about 300 feet away from the service box. That's the equivalent of a 300-foot 12-gauge extension cord. I was thinking that a plugin welder just would not work, and I really needed a genset of some kind. Then I thought about electronics: Harbor Freight has an inverter stick welder for $150 - and often on sale. This thing is even tinier than the 150STL. Weighs 8 pounds. If it's an inverter, maybe it's got a voltage regulator that would compensate for long runs? I really didn't want to take the Miller to Fresno. Just for yuks, I had my staff out there buy one, some welding rods, gloves, a chipping hammer, and an auto-darkening helmet. Bought the extended warranty, kept the receipt. Thing worked PERFECT. Staff welded the gate, no problem. We needed to put steel pole supports for a staircase. Staff welded the poles to the staircase, no problem. It has already paid for itself. It only goes to 80 amps, and the duty cycle is nothing to write home about, but you can't beat the price! HF also has some small transformer-based welders, but from all reports, they're pure garbage. - Jerry ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3122 **********************************
