It had about 45K on it, and had been stored for a year or so. Riding it home from Santa Cruz, it died on highway 1 south of Half Moon Bay and coasted to a stop. After an outrageously expensive tow home to San Mateo I discovered that each horizontally opposed head was driven by a rubber belt. One belt had broken. I replaced both belts and had one head done at the motorcycle machine shop. I don't remember the price of the belts, so I suppose it was not terribly high - but I do remember being somewhat shocked at the prices of all those little bent valves. OTOH, my Chevy Astro van has one serpentine belt at the front that runs all the accessories. I think that's a marvelous system: one easy-to-replace belt, automagically tensioned by a spring arm with a square hole in it to stick in a breaker bar.
