Too much mechanical crap to go wrong. And the duty cycle is miniscule. For a cheap wire feed, I'd hit Craigslist for a Hobart or a Miller or a Lincoln. I was going to get a recon Hobart 140 for $400 at the local Home Depot, but it doesn't seem to be there anymore. The real class act in carryaround MIG is the Millermatic Passport, which looks like an attache case with a built-in inverter power source and mechanism and gas bottle. But it costs $1500 :(. HF does have an inverter-based 110V stick welder that seems to work pretty good. I got one of those for my guys in Fresno. Tiny little thing. Less to go wrong with a stick welder. But it only does 80 Amps, IIRC. I got a Miller 150STL TIG welder. Not cheap, but it does the job for TIG and stick, and it's small and light. I think it weighs 11 pounds. Scored it on ebay for $900. The stick-only version goes a bit cheaper, and it's really all you need for occasional knock about repairs on thick stock. And stick is almost as easy as MIG. TIG OTOH does take some practice. - Jerry Kaidor ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Nov 2009 20:36:55 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] 4.0L in the wj status pulled the valve cover today on the '00 WJ 4.0... need a special socket for the head bolts... all the valves go up and down... good sign. paul came over and looked at the wj today... we have a theory that the head gasket blew a chunk into #2, that bent the plug (damage wasn't severe to the plug) and the resulting pressure from the cylinder popped the upper rad hose. will chase down the socket tomorrow... in other news, mark got the NP229 swapped in his '85 GW... working good, the case was cracked... the guy came over and test drove the '86 cj-10a... going to bring the 2002 Subaru over for me to check out... may trade. the '89 xj is ready to go, might be gone tomorrow. oh yeah, found a '99 3.0L Mercedes Diesel engine out of a wreck... guy wants $2500 for it... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Nov 2009 20:49:28 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] welder/generator options. thanx jerry... will look for hobart or miller... had a HF buzzbox, never wired it up, solid it to my mechanical engr buddy building up a '56 willys panel... he won't be doing anything heavy duty with it... so nice having a Diesel generator that starts with the turn of a key... shoot, my benz and tug don't start as easy... too bad it would be nearly impossible to move the welder head onto the Diesel setup... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Fri, 27 Nov 2009, Jerry Kaidor wrote: # > I've got two generators... only need one... well, actually # > don't need any, we rarely lose power... Jeeps a plenty... the guy that I got the dead 2000 WJ from finally looked at the '89 XJ... AFTER we transfered titles today... and decided he is going to let me buy it back cheap... no complaints... I like the '89 XJ limited... it still needs some TLC, but it's a nice clean rig... So I'll finish dialing it in and make a nice return on that labor. Hopefully my '83 J10 step side will be done soon... because, the guy interested in the '86 cj-10a is getting the 2002 subura ready for the trade, will check it out next week... will sell the legacy right as soon as SuperDawg is home... the little tug has been a blast. We made a WVO run today with it down into Seattle... did quite well. So, I'm heading out to the monster carport right now. Got the 12 point 1/2" 1/2" drive deep socket today to pull the head on the '00 WJ 4.0 and see what evil lurks there in... am still hoping the head is ok... but the way my luck is going with all the delays... not expecting it to be good... :) thankfully the '91 300d is doing fine, just needs "go juice"... heading up to the biodiesel barn tomorrow with wvo to get some... only problem is my barrel lift is kaput and my electric tranfer fuel pump doesn't like the cooler weather and biodiesel... not sure how I'll get the biodiesel from there to here and in the tanks... my 5 gal cans were loaned to a friend who is currently on contract in Iowa... so I may be stuck siphoning biodiesel from the 20gal barrels... :) mark and I got his '85 Grand Wagoneer fixed, we swapped the xfr case out yesterday! it's out of the shop... and two jeeps are taking it's place... (the '89 xj and the '00 wj) All in all when I get all these vehicles fixed and out of here I will have pretty much covered the wedding expenses! The Lord has provided... now I have to go out and bust some knuckles. :) soon for sale: '02 subaru legacy '00 grand cherokee '89 cherokee limited ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://creationwiki.org http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3177 **********************************
