His cracked where the hose met the tank, and he repaired it with ABS pipe glue and it seems to be holding. Then again, his wife hasn't driven it yet. A new radiator isn't cheap for that thing, and used ones likely have the same issue. I have two running vehicles, one running but without paperwork that should be ready Wednesday and yet another running vehicle by the end of the week... in other words, no need to panic... :) word from centralia is that superdawg will be done... hopefully sooner than later... superdawg, the '83 J10 stepside with the sd33t/tf727/np208 on 3.54 dana 44s and 235/75 15s is by far the best looking most practical solution. I have examined, experimented and tried a variety of other setups but keep coming back to that FSJ J10 stepside... so... in the meantime I checked out a variety of Diesels... learned from the collectvie that I really do not want a W210 Mercedes Diesel ('96-'03), I don't know if I'm going to test drive it or not... likely not... also learned that I'm not quick enough to score an inexpensive TDI, especially when the guy doesn't return email (I still have the cash ready)... also, that I really don't want a 2wd Diesel that is rusted, or a 2wd Diesel that has a bad transmission... I've found out haw many flakes there really are on craigslist... they don't answer their phone, return emails... will, not until a day or two AFTER you had the time to look or have purchased something else, and they'll put a thumbnail picture on line and wonder why you want to see pictures! and the pictures they take are amazingly horrible... they walk a block away, hold the camera vertical for a horizontal picture so the subject is in the middle of the picture and takes up maybe 10% of the entire surface... of course after they've run their fingers over the lens after eating a bag of potato chips or changing the oil, just to give that special effect... I even looked at what should have been a very nice '84 Blazer, from the description... and for the most part it was... but the guy was a smoker and had painted the truck with a rattle can with his 12 yr old son... ok, it was ONE color and didn't look all that bad, but I'll pass anyway... :) I even found a $500 non-rusted 2wd Toyota gas with extended cab and thought about swapping the Diesel into it... until I did that crazy reality check thing again... :) so, currently running and in use: '91 300D and the '99 WJ paperwork pending on my nice white '89 XJ limited that will end up doing WVO service until superdawg is healed... and the '00 WJ that looks like my '99 WJ but has a 4.0 instead of a 4.7 will be done this week, will get cleaned up nicely, tested thoroughly to make sure it's perfect, and then sell it. so, at this point, I wouldn't stock up on a lot of extra popcorn... I have tried to tell her that we can go "natural"... the house existed where we are with NO gardens and just a field on that hillside for 10 years before we got there... a nice new modular home and a pole barn on a small patch of ground on the edge of civilization should work just fine... finding a one level townhome with at least a two car garage and a view will allow me to tinker a bit... plan on keeping the Grand Cherokee, or replacing it with a Diesel version... and my J10... by getting into a place with out land we should be able to use our equity to get it... and possibly might have lower property taxes... but if the current batch of elected folks keep spending and taxing I'm not so sure that even that will be affordable... we either need a version of Prop 13 here, or we need to move to another part of the country that isn't quite as oppressive tax-wise... someplace were tax and spend liberals are not in power... not sure if such a place exists... :( We have a senior "deferral" program for property taxes where taxes are reduced... until you sell or transfer the property... which means my kids would end up paying a LOT of back taxes or losing value on any inheritance they might realize. my uncle lives down in California... his house is worth about the same as ours... he has owned it since the '60s... because of prop 13 he pays about $700 a year. My taxes keep going up, been here for almost 15 years and they are around $4,000 a year and climbing... and will continue to do so... when we bought the place they were about $1200 a year. If we had a prop 13 here that would be what I would pay until we sold or transferred the property. That seems very fair to me, most people don't stay in a place very long so when they move they can budget to that level and the state doesn't suffer because the taxes are level set at each move. oh well... same thing with our license plates... supposed to be $30/yr, just renewed the '91 300d and it was $48. ;) which is a vast improvement over what they were before... in '97, before Tim Eyeman's $30 tab initiative we were paying nearly $800 a YEAR for tabs on a five year old car... a friend of mine had a new Range Rover, he was paying nearly $4k/yr for tabs... same thing was true with motorhomes... it was based on the value of the vehicle so folks would be paying thousands a year... what they'd do is get a temporary tag for two weeks to use it while on vacation... :) or they'd register it in Oregon where the tabs are $20/yr... and risk a big ticket if they got caught in this state with it... even CA was less expensive. thankfully we don't have an income tax... yet... it's inevitable... they need more revenue to run all the social programs they want to implement... sales tax is nearly 10%... of course Boeing and Microsoft have moved their headquarters out of this state to avoid the B&O, capital assett and other corporate taxes that don't make the news... we're facing a $2.6B shortfall, thankfully our constitution prohibits debt so they have to balance the budget some how... they're talking about adding tax to candy bars, and even more taxes to cigarettes and liquor... not much talk about cutting programs... I believe that over 50% of the workforce in this state is employed in some form of government... oh well, enough of the lamentations from the soap box... love it here, but not sure we can afford to live or retire here... what drives me crazy is we could buy four houses in houston that are 3 times the size of ours for what our little 1200 sqft place is worth here... :) the thought of living in a hot muggy location is not appealing... or living in some frigid location... moving isn't desireable because our kids are here... speaking of knees, anyone know of any good doctors in the Everett area? john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Tue, 12 Jan 2010, Bruce Caruthers wrote: # John wrote: # "we're likely moving into a condo/townhouse in the next few years # and won't need a trailer for the garden work any more..." # # # What?!? # # How on earth will you survive without your carport and project space? # I can't imagine any condo/townhouse places allowing the kind of # vehicle work you would want to do! # # -bkc # Lynnwood, WA # (his) '76 MB 240D [W115.117/616.916] # (hers) '92 Toyota Celica GT # (ours) '93 MB 300D 2.5 Turbo [W124.128/602.962] # ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 2010 09:44:02 -0800 (PST) From: Jim Hoffman Subject: Re: [db] popcorn summary report Yup, Socialist Republic of Wisconsin isn't any better.
