Electronically, it was not hugely complicated ( this was back in the 70's ), but the schematics were almost hand-drawn. And annotated in Japanese. :). I was working in the Instrument shop, we got to work on pretty much everything. - Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2010 15:07:11 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] OT: Gasser Question. It was well packed in it's own box but it had two straps that held cardboard to it in both directs, from side to side and top to bottom. The strap that went from side to side, or horizontal, around the radiator pulled one side of the radiator in so that the second row of fins in the center (from top to bottom) has been bent into the shape of an L. I don't think it'll be an issue but what do you guys think? The bend in the water tube is slight, barely noticeable. I can send a picture. Thanks, Marc Z in NC Mike Frank wrote: > I would strongly suggest doing so. Didn't see any obvious cracked solder joints. And the whole thing is covered with silicone, so large-scale reflowing is not practical. Guess I'll just go get another CPU at the NAPA. - Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jan 2010 20:04:06 -0800 (PST) From: "Jerry Kaidor" Subject: [db] Astro Repair Adventures Hi Guys! Still working on my no-start Astro. After checking out pretty much all the sensors, I convinced myself that the problem was the ECU itself - not outputting pulses to the fuel injectors. So I went searching for a new one. One complication - a new ECU needs to be flashed. No shop I called on the SF Peninsula could do it. Only the dealers. And they wanted the truck towed to them! Searching around on the web, I found a company that makes a professional-level programmer for ECU's. Called them, asked "Do you have any customers in the Bay Area? They pointed me to an autoparts store in San Jose. Quote from the store was $130 for the part, plus $150 to have it flashed. They send it out. They need your old unit to do it. Guy said it would take a couple hours. So I drove the jag down to San Jose. Somehow, instead of it taking them 2 hours to flash the new part, it took four. So there I was at 5:00. It was raining cats'n dogs. Got into the jag - the windshield wipers were dead! Folks, you haven't lived until you've driven through Silicon Valley friday night rush hour traffic in the dark and the rain without wipers. I pulled over at an OSH, bought a LED flashlight and some cheap tools, found and fixed the problem. It was a dirty connection at a fuse, that had gotten hot and burned the fuse. I fixed it by swapping fuses with the AC. Figured wipers were more important than AC that night :). This morning, I got up and installed the new ECU. Car still won't start! But now, according to the scope, there are at least good pulses going to the fuel injectors. Back to the basics - fuel, spark, compression. Hope it's dry tomorrow. - Jerry Kaidor ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3230 **********************************
