In many respects, it's a shame that traditional manual transmissions are on the way out. I've found that it provides another way for an engineering team to show their stuff. Some are just great, like the 85 944 and the 96 Z3 I've owned, some are effective but much less elegant, like my 1990(?) Indeed. When I bought the diesel ram, I sought out the clutch, and while I still prefer it to the same truck with the four speed automatic, the shifter feels like a broomhandle in a bucket of base rock. I picked it up in arlington, and it took me almost to amarillo to be able to shift it to fifth without thinking I was going to catch reverse... 85 190D with clutch I didn't think was bad, but John pushed it twice, felt a twinge in his back, and said he was going to stick to automatics ;) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Feb 2010 13:58:02 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: Re: [db] snohomish monster carport... one less... the rabbit has a 5 speed that needs a search party for 1st at a stop, and the same team to find 2nd on the way down... first is permanently hard to find... but even holding the clutch in at lights (because I finally found 1st) doesn't seem to bother my back because the seat has good lumbar support... ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Sat, 6 Feb 2010, Kevin wrote: # On Sat, Feb 06, 2010 at 01:02:44PM -0600, Alec Cordova wrote: # > > something about a manual trans in an xj # > > is just plain brutal... not having trouble with the VW stick... # > # > Interesting observation. # > In many respects, it's a shame that traditional manual transmissions are on # > the way out. I've found the trick to find 1st gear on the VW's is to pull up on the stick. If you pull the boot off you'll most likely see nylon plate that the L shaped finger on the shifter rides against to locate first and reverse is worn. I drove my last golf 50K miles by just lifting up on the lever. My car had some "issues" that made it fun to watch anyone else attempt to drive. Between the mystery 1st gear and the bad syncro's in 3rd that only ground if you didn't hit the gear at the right speed, lets just say no one would borrow it more than once. The other big cause for a sloppy shifter is bad bushings, and thats a cheap job to fix. BTW, that caddy is nice and clean. If that were in New England it would be very crispy to say the least. My old 86 Golf diesel actually rotted the engine crossmember to the point I was afraid that a good pothole would rip the lower A arm off. - -don On Sat, Feb 06, 2010 at 01:58:02PM -0800, john wrote: > the rabbit has a 5 speed that needs a search party for 1st at a stop, > and the same team to find 2nd on the way down... first is permanently > hard to find... but even holding the clutch in at lights (because I > finally found 1st) doesn't seem to bother my back because the seat > has good lumbar support... > > > > ----- > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold > http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum > http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > > On Sat, 6 Feb 2010, Kevin wrote: > > # On Sat, Feb 06, 2010 at 01:02:44PM -0600, Alec Cordova wrote: > # > > something about a manual trans in an xj > # > > is just plain brutal... not having trouble with the VW stick... > # > > # > Interesting observation. > # > In many respects, it's a shame that traditional manual transmissions are on > # > the way out. John, When you trounce the300D the engine tries to spin only to be held back by the mounts, it still moves and inch or so at the top. I would look for a loose wire or more likely chafed wires next to something that moves with the trouncing ;-) and which then shorts or grounds. Have been in the shop trying to fix a 1948 zenith transoceanic radio - had a bad power switch, mis adjusted indicator control, one of the cords on the dial failed ( happen to have a spool of replacement cord) and all the insulation on the wires will just crumble off if touched. This latter flaw is what I find in most older European cars, the plastic or rubberized cable sheathing gets brittle with age and flakes off, producing many gremlins.
