I'm not making this up... ;) the title on the news item was "sunbreak causes 23 car pileup on I-5"... http://www.komonews.com/news/local/84257037.html SEATTLE -- Sun, rain, and inattentive drivers led to a massive chain-reaction crash that shut down the southbound lanes of I-5 near Shoreline Friday afternoon for nearly an hour, troopers said. The crash occurred around 1 p.m. just south of NE 145 Street and officials quickly shut down all lanes to deal with the mess. A total of 23 cars were involved but no one was seriously hurt, troopers said. Just prior to the crash, a rain squall gave way to sunshine and the reflection of the sun off the pooled roadway water could have blinded drivers, Trooper Christina Martin said. She adds inattentive drivers who were following too close together for the conditions also contributed to the crash. ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Feb 2010 13:55:41 -0800 From: Tom H Subject: [db] Windshield Wipers O.K. Who remembers how to remove the windshield wiper arms from a W126. It's not in the service manual. I went to change the blades on my MB and the spring on the underside that holds the arm down came off. Trying to put it back on while it is mounted in the center of the car is proving futile. Those springs are very strong and stretch only a little, which means it fights me and gets loose every time I try. It would probably work a lot better if I could get the entire wiper arm off to work on it. I had to pry that up (which gets easier on subsequent tries after the plastic has snapped) to expose a set screw that held the wiper arm on its shaft. I would be hesitant to just try to walk the arm off the spline if I wasn't sure there were no set screw involved. Had to replace mine twice and spent a whole day taking it apart and putting it back together till I figured it out. I had a bad grommet on one of the mechanical pieces that runs the system go bad so the wiper motor would spin but the wipers didn't work. Did you know you cant just replace the grommet, you have to get a whole new mechanism which if you buy it from MB would cost 800 clams. Luckily I got one from a junkyard for 120. When I replaced mine I found you had to pry from the same direction of the wiper arm after you remove the retaining nut. Let me try to explain that with a caveman drawing. The green is a screwdriver and direction to pry; you will find that it is much easier to deal with the wiper arm if it is pulled away from the windshield. You will also find it easier if you grab the wiper arm and wiggle or help walk it off of the driver shaft.(Orange) When you pry the end cap up it will feel like you are going to break it, the spline on the rotating shaft is pretty solid, but the metal of the wiper arm where it interlocks to the spline shaft feels like cheap pot metal and I was worried that the splines might strip out so don't lose the lock washer. I broke the plastic molding underneath when I was doing this so what John says is a good idea. I didn't care because I had only bought that car for the engine which is now being installed in My 78 coupe. I will post some pictures in another thread. - - Show quoted text - On Sat, Feb 13, 2010 at 5:28 PM, Alec Cordova wrote: > My 124 coupe used the single wiper system, so it may have needed a more > secure mounting than most, but there was a dark plastic cap on the exterior > of the wiper assembly, just at the transition from motor assembly to wiper > arm.
