The Original "replacement" compressor that John put in before I bought the car seized up on me several years ago (about a year after I bought it). I replaced it with another "used" compressor. That one stopped working shortly after the repair. I went a few years without AC, then finally decided a few weeks ago to just pay a mechanic to fix it, since my wife refuses to drive the car in the summer without it.understandably at 90-113 degrees.it gets pretty darn miserable. So, the shop put a reman compressor in.it worked great for about 10 days, and then started making horrible noises and got swapped again. The second reman compressor didn't even make it home.DOA..they left it in so I could drive it while they ordered a replacement. Now the shop decided to buy a new one. It's in, and I just brought it home last night, but he now says that the fan clutch is not working.. This makes sense.I saw the engine temp rising as I drove home up a large hill, and the AC compressor was cycling off and on.and not cooling very well. It was about 96 degrees, which is when you really need that extra cooling from the fan to pull the air through the condenser and radiator to keep everything working well. I thought..oh, easy, I can just order a replacement clutch and replace it myself.will be done within a week. However, I just checked on the web and the price is anywhere from $300 - $400 for a new fan clutch. Yikes!! I noticed on my google searches that some folks are selling the fan clutch switch for about $25. When these magnetic clutches fail, is it often because of this switch, or would there be other reasons such as clutch plate wear, etc..? Any way that I can test it to figure out if I can just replace the switch and save $275? Or should I just bite the bullet and get the new fan clutch? As always, your advice and opinions are welcome! - -- Scott 1985 Mercedes 190D 2.2L ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jul 2010 11:47:16 -0700 From: john Subject: Re: [db] Fan Clutch / ac compressor Scott, I was surfing the web looking for a/c compressors for my 124... found several new/rebuilt on line for under $250... the compressor on my 124 was replaced, but still leaks... so I went to pep boys and bought a case of r134... when driving if it doesn't blow cold, I pull over, put a can on the little hose/gauge setup, open the hood, open the can, attach and drive... within a few minutes it's chilled, next chance I pull over, close the valve, pop the hose setup off, put it back in the trunk for the next refresh in anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks... :) for some reason it seems to do better when used all the time... will have to ask rube goldberg about this system. ;) guess mercedes compressors on the 201 and 124's aren't all that great... hard to find in wrecking yards...
