By the time we arrived there, each shift of the transmission was a hard thump, and I mean real hard, something I have not experienced before. Car has 210K miles on it and the fluid and filter were last changed at 170K or so. Fluid level seems normal. Color a bit brownish but still see the reddish color in it, does not smell overly toasted. Any pointers on what to check next? I have priced new filter, gasket and torque converter seal - all for 20 bucks. The transmission fluid from Benz is 15 to 20/liter and I am guessing I will need about 8 liters? Anyone done the change themselves? Any idea why the sudden hard hitting shifts? Door locks and vacuum seems normal, all that was working before still works same, except for the shift issue. I think I am going to change the fluid and filter this winter when car goes into storage, but first to locate the cause! Thanks all. Looked at the transmission housing from below and find mechanical, hydraulic and electrical connections to it - cannot find a single vacuum line anywhere visible nor hanging anywhere disconnected. Does anyone know if the 1991 300D even uses vacuum to control the transmission? If so, where does it connect? I have the car up on a lift so it is easy to get under it. Plan to do the rear shocks and change the transmission fluid and filter on the off chance that the problem is old fluid past it's prime (has about 50K miles on it). Thanks for the suggestions and any added input. Edward On 11/20/2010 8:46 PM, dieseljohn@comcast.net wrote: > Check the vacuum lines that go around to a Y on the passenger side, by the air box.
