Like I always say, if you want an FSJ you have to meet one of the four tests: You think you want a Full Size Jeep? 1) are you a mechanic? 2) are you married to a mechanic? 3) are you related to a mechanic? 4) are you independently wealthy and know a good mechanic? If you can't answer yes to any of the above, this may not be the best choice in vehicles for you. I have a number of options for engines... I may use my SD33T/727/NP208 combination, rebuild the 360 V8 and put it in Superdawg. I don't know if I still have the 4.2 or if curtis gets that, I think I still have a T5 but I'd rather go with an automatic. The Chief would become my WVO Diesel daily driver, replacing the Jetta and relegating the D300 to my wife. This would also replace the WJ and would get rid of the trailer instead of the J10. So, I'd have the '83 Chief and the '83 J10 and the '91 300D. I might even follow through and rebuild the IP on the other SD33T and put that in Superdawg if I can find another Scout/RV-727. I don't know why, but I fell in love with the Chief just by looking at it... it reminds me a lot of Superdawg, but will be better, my wife can recline the seats to ease her back pain. Lots of work ahead of me... will need to get the drivetrain out of superdawg and drag all that stuff home... hope to get it all sorted out over the Christmas break. I may be able to get another good 360 pretty quick as Mark and I were talking about building up the 360 in his '85 Grand Wagoneer... we'd just use the one out of the '83 as a build project. I miss Superdawg, but this will work out fine. Superdawg will end up with a bigger engine for hauling stuff and the Chief will be more economical, yet capable of hauling, and will be the road warrior in place of the WJ. :) ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2010 19:58:32 -0600 From: Alec Cordova Subject: Re: [db] 1983 Cherokee Chief Just in time. I'm in love. :) here's the pictures: http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/rigs/1983-CherokeeChief/ALL.html my son and I will probably bench build the bad engine, maybe put his good 360 into this, or maybe my J10. Although I have a non-running SD33T that I think will continue to get worked on and put in the J10. I don't want to get rid of superdawg or this cherokee chief. I plan to set this Cherokee up as a daily driver on WVO/Diesel and make it a comfortable interstate cruiser... if all goes as planned I should see close to 20 in town and mid-20's on the interstate. :) not sure what gears it has, likely 3.31's, which will be good for the highway with the SD33T and 235's. The J10 has 3.54s and 235s, which is the same setup as the scout, rated at 20/24. I don't recall if the the axles are interchangeable between a J10 and a WT. Anyone know? I'm looking at a lot of work, but I think my wife will prefer the Cherokee over my J10. She hates superdawg. Will sell my WJ and TDI once the Cherokee is done... I'm glad that the body and paint are respectable on the Chief... the rest of it is manageable. Eventually I'll get it painted nicely, maybe to match Superdawg. The original color of both isn't bad, it's possible that superdawg has some paint like my '99 WJ, that's ok by me too... :) here's my '83 J10 stepside... hoping that I will be able to build both and keep both... we'll see... :) http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/SuperDawg/Best-of-SuperDawg/ the plan (in my mind) is to have the Cherokee as my daily Diesel driver, the J10 to haul stuff for the garden and the '91 300D for my wife... I think I will continue with the plan to put the other SD33T into my J10... all Diesel fleet running WVO and BioDiesel. This should keep the popcorn going for awhile... not going to rush this project, but it won't take 10 years either... first thing is to get it running, then the interior... :) btw, who texted me yesterday? :) all I saw was a phone number and congrats on the cherokee, didn't recognize the number, don't usually use texts... :) wife just called, the check engine light came on on the WJ... I need to get the TDI into the shop to swap the IP... yikes, I see wrenches in my future... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Dec 2010 22:15:55 -0800 From: john Subject: [db] Re: fsj: popcorn special (tdi's, sd33t's, 300Ds, WJs, FSJs, oh my...) got my TDI to the shop tonight, it sounded horrible... when I drove into the shop's lot they were all looking at it... sounded like chitty chitty bang bang... hopefully the used IP pump will swap out without drama... but why would it? :) looking at the Cherokee pictures it's nice to see it's all setup for an Automatic. superdawg is setup for manual trans so I may keep it that way and look for a Scout manual trans for Superdawg... or some way of mating my T5 to the SAE#4 adapter so I can use what I have and keep superdawg as as stick since he'll be the dirt hauling errand vehicle. anyone have any ideas on the SAE#4 adapter out of my CJ-10A to a Jeep T5? I'm trying to remember if I sold that adapter... don't think I did. I'm wondering if I shouldn't find an old J10 and swap the axle so I can use the Scout transmission/xfr case... we'll see... first things first... not sure I want a Dana 20 xfr case anyone on the CJ-10 list have a setup that will work in an '83 Cherokee mated to an SD33T? also noticed that both '83 trucks have A/C. :) which means I can probably rob the brackets off the 360 to adapt to the SD33T. will try to get it working in both. then today, my WJ spit up a check engine code today... the P0442 error, a leak in the fuel vent, or a bad gas cap... not sure how to fix that... guess my mightyvac that I bought to work on the Diesel Benz will be useful. need to get the 300D realigned since it has new tires... it's not pulling hard to the right now, but slightly to the left... my son plans to put a locker in his '85 GW this weekend... he's moving back in tomorrow... he got my office out in the garage and I got the upstairs bedroom... a good thing, forced me to purge, selling a bunch of stuff off on ebay because of their free listing sale. :) http://shop.ebay.com/dieseljohn/m.html so, first thing is to get my TDi back from the shop, figure out the P0442 code on the WJ, get the FEA on the 300D, help my son with the GW locker, figure out how to get the Chief home and then get all my stuff and superdawg up from centralia, never heard from curtis despite emails, phone calls... hope everything is ok down there... guess I don't need to bring superdawg up right away, but I will need that engine, and want to use the nice grille on the Chief... john interim score: 2003 Jetta GLS TDI wagon - in shop, getting a Used Injection pump installed - should be all it needs for some time 40-50mpg! 1991 300D - new tires, needs the front alignment dialed in 1983 J10 stepside - superdawg - in pieces in centralia for about 10 years now... 1983 Cherokee Chief - non-running and waiting for me to pick it up - bad 360 suspected, new 727/np228 1999 WJ - spitting up an emissions code: P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (medium leak) (any thoughts on the fix?)
