Found a local Jeep lover (from the FSJ list). Working out the details. Was so encouraged by the last conversation with Curtis, and so broke from fixing my VW that I have to focus my energy on getting Superdawg together ASAP. Heading down next week to assist in the work. Also, I had a therapy session with a friend in Ohio (the list mom for the FSJ and XJ lists) and he reminded me how much I "love" the FSJ tailgate/windows... then my wife took one look at what I thought was an absolutely lovely picture of a nearly perfect Wide Track Cherokee and she said "yuck", it's old... and I said in it's defense, it's just like Superdawg, like his brother... and she said she hates Superdawg too... that and the two grand I had to put into my VW Jetta TDI to replace the injection pump and injectors, kind of took the wind out of my sails to doing another jeep project... so I am happy a local friend is getting it and will care for it. In the meantime, I'm going to be heading down to Centralia after Christmas to expedite by all means possible the SuperDawg project. The other bit of news that lead me away from starting the Cherokee project was that the SD33T/RV-TF727/NP208 are in the chassis... frame needs to be cleaned up and painted, the cab mounted back on the frame and then all the wiring/plumbing... and of course painting starts... lots going on down in Centralia... so I'm hoping to at least get the frame done, the painting one and big parts attached, then I'll be happy to drag it home to put the finishing touches on it... anyway... we'll see how all this plays out... :) fwiw, the TDI is running strong... will be curious to see the mileage... in the meantime I'm having fun leaving traffic in the rear view mirror... that 11mm pump makes a noticeable difference in power... hopefully not economy as well. ;) the target fleet: 1983 J10 stepside (superdawg) with said SD33t and the 1991 300D (shadowfax). that means we'll be selling the '99 WJ, the '75 J10 trailer and likely the '03 VW Jetta TDI... eventually... :) john On 12/20/2010 6:22 PM, john wrote: > I'm running into a number of unexpected expenses and am giving second thoughts to developing the '83 Cherokee as > a project... Spokane is about 300 miles east of us... eastern washington, normal for them to have snow. heard about this, didn't see the video... all of that was avoidable... plenty of room to drive out of that mess.. did you see the WRONG reaction? people just locked up the brakes and went sledding... I'm biting my tongue until it's bleeding not to scream names and obscenties at the utter stupidity displayed! amazing how people just lock up the brakes and slide... so idiotic... WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? Did they have driver's ed? have they ever taken a car to a snow covered parking lot and found out how to stop and start? ALWAYS DRIVE OUT OF A SITUATION like this... apply power, pump brakes, aim for a curb or snow bank... steer and power... swap ends if you have to... you can avoid hitting someone, a few folks did it... The guy with that big truck could have popped it into 4wd once pointed up hill and stood on it... likely all four tires would have caused him to slide with the crown but also likely he wouldn't have kept sliding down the hill... once he started sliding with the crown he could have aimed or let gravity redirect him... ONE TRICK I LEARNED that ALWAYS works... ...if you're coming down a hill, or on sheer ice or slippery surface and can not stop... first, put it in NEUTRAL and pump the brakes, correct your steering to maintain control.... THEN if all else in the way of braking fails, USE REVERSE... really... it works... reverse will stop you, or maybe swap ends if you're in a 4x4 or front wheel drive, but once you're pointed away from hard objects, mash the go pedal and give it the beans and prepare to continue going in the other direction and hope that the dingaling behind you figures out what you're doing and does the same... if not, vector out of his way... or prepare to stop him as well.... STAY ON THE POWER IF your vehicle is headed in a safe direction... pay attention, think, I know, I know, it's hard, but you can do it... really... clueless masses... no wonder things are so screwed up in this world, people don't follow through with actions when there is even a little hope left... giving up is expensive... And you will NOT hurt the transmission or engine... you're already slipping and sliding the chance of you catching dry pavement and hooking up is very slight, and what will happen if you do, you'll kill the engine, or stop... or both... but that's the desired effect... right? I've saved myself in the mountains many times with this trick, even though I learned it as a flat lander in Chicago. It's saved me in my driveway many, many times... I've avoided multiple car pileups with this trick, getting myself the heck out of the rest of the pack's way... that's the other thing, when traveling in traffic make sure you have lots of room in front and watch for the hotshot behind you, he may or may not know what he/she is doing... let 'em pass... and remember, FAST UPHILL, SLOW DOWNHILL (in neutural or a lower gear) WHEN STARTING OUT, don't be afraid to have your tires spinning and be going sideways, steer into the skid and maintain an smooth even pressure so you keep moving forward, this IS WHERE A DIESEL IS PERFECT, it will not overrev and you can maintain a constant speed and control... I've made it up hills with my 300D on bald tires that had 4x4's stuck... I hit the hill with some speed and was sideways all the way up to the top... wasn't sure I was going to make it... hhad I gotten off the go pedal it would have been game over... oh sure, I could have swapped ends, gone down the hill for another mile or so, turned around and made another run at it, but once you fail it's hard to overcome your fears the second time... so man (or woman) up and keep your foot in it going up hill... (love doing this with my WJ, four, count 'em, rooster tails... :) ONCE YOU HIT THE TOP... get into a lower gear, ease it down, like a granny, if you're still picking up speed going down hill don't panic and lock up, USE NEUTRAL and pump the brakes... as needed, being ready to drop it into reverse. The trick works with rear wheel, front wheel, all wheel and four wheel drive... With front wheel drive you will slow down and stop pretty quick and may swap ends, be ready to point the steering in the direction you want to go (away from what was as the bottom of the hill) and shift to a forward gear... if you want you can pull a sweet 180 when shifting into the forward gear and power back up the hill... VW's are great for this... 4x4's will stop very fast with reverse... (hint: don't get out of the vehicle on foot thinking you will have traction... you likely will end up sliding the rest of the way down the hill on your seat... really... don't ask me how I know this...) REMEMBER: NEVER EVER STOP DRIVING, DON'T PANIC, DON'T STAND on the brakes... use neutral when in doubt and reverse as needed to stop. SLOW DOWN HILL, FAST UPHILL... gravity is both an enemy and your friend... if you're heading up hill fast and you need to stop, you will... if you're heading fast down hill and you need to stop, you won't... gravity... it's not just for flat landers... USING NEUTRAL allows for better control... if your tires are trying to move you forward on ice you will not have control and may swap ends... feel your car, feel the road... and be aware of the clueless masses who have never practices a power slide, four wheel drift or high speed turn in dirt, snow or on ice... When all else fails, it's probably better to hit something going backwards... that way you might still be able to drive what's left of your car home... and you have more crunch zone back there... but you should be able to find something softer to hit than an immoveable object... try to stay out of ditches and avoid pedestrians... no one needs to get hurt out there, it's all manageable... And when you get a fresh snow, take your car to an open parking lot, noting where the light posts and curbs are FIRST... and then play around... try turning the steering wheel full lock left or right and flooring it... see if you can turn around in your parking space... I used to love doing that back home... Get up to speed and slam on the brakes, just hold them and feel that sick feeling of hopeless sliding, no control... the utter desparation of a clueless fool riding a steel beast to their imminent demise... then after you've slid what feels like eternity, start up again and pump your brakes in gear and in neutural, feel the difference? Now try slamming the brakes and once sliding put it in reverse and get on the beans... wow, stopped pretty fast didn't it? ok, now, clear all your windows... slip on those leather racing gloves and go out there and avoid the clueless masses by driving around them stuck at lights and on hills or in ditches... oh yeah, do NOT stop completely at a stop sign unless you really like it there... because you likely will not get going again until some clueless person slides into you and moves you off that patch of ice found at stop signs and lights... for signal lights, approach a red light slowing, keeping forward momentum and safe distances, then power out and through when it changes... if you have a light at the bottom of hill, see if the intersection is clear before heading down... if you can't stop and it's clear blow the red light with caution... no cop any where in the world will give you a ticket if you ggo through a light or stop sign slowly, cautiously and clearly being careful... avoid the ruts... drive in the snow in the middle, you'll have better traction... if you're in the mountains and on glare ice, try to get to the high side of the road, hug the mountain if you can... better to be in the ditch next to the mountain than against the guard rail overlooking that scenic river thousands of feet below... because the next poor sap coming down the mountain may be going faster than you and push you and the guard rail over and to that scenic river below... you're likely safer in your vehicle than walking around in the open... you will not be able to move as fast as a car sliding with the brakes locked... and never abandon your vehicle in the middle of the street... try to push it to one side or another... or better, get it stuck to the side... ok, I'm done with my winter driving rant... oh, one other bit of advice for seattlites... I would avoid the freeways or limited access roads... because they are limited access and there are a large number of clueless people here who either abandon their vehicles in the middle of the road or sit there for the 8 to 10 hours until the snow melts... backroads are better, but require more skill because of their steepness and lack of use... I'm glad it doesn't snow very often here... :) just remember what Winston Churchill said, never, ever, ever give up... what he meant was, keep on driving... :) ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Dec 2010 09:44:17 -0500 From: Steve Morelen Subject: [db] no MB: watch to smile Alaskan elementary school holiday video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyviyF-N23A ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3361 **********************************
