I always thought it happend on St. Patricks Day, but my cousin corrected me... I remember shoveling snow over my head and watching a full grown German Shepard run down the stairs and disappear into the snow... and then seeing pictures of kids jumping off of 2nd and 3rd story windows into very deep snow drifts. I guess the reason I remember St. Patrick's day was that the snow stuck around until then... going to look at the '87 190D at 2pm... I drove the Jetta for fun this morning... it wasn't much... although I did hit 85 in 4th gear at 4000 rpm... but running it hard didn't reveal orders of magnitude more power than I felt when driving it conservatively. 20% increase in power is still substantial, and that's what the 2.5L Diesel n/a will be over the 2.2L I had in my '85. It'll be interesting to see how well a 24 year old 275,000 mile 2.5L will feel... the pictures look good, shows a few dings and dents... but a look see under the hood will tell the rest of the story... that it still has the factory radio is impressive... that tells me that whoever owned this kept the car stock... also noticed that the hood has paint issues on the same spot as my '91... and this one doesn't have a turbo so it's just normal heat. If this 190D can't unseat the Jetta from daily driver position, I can't think of much else that will... 32 mpg vs. 38 mpg - auto vs. stick is a no-brainer... hoping that the a/c works... BTW, parked next to the '07 Mercedes Bluetec... beautiful car, not overstated, simple looking yet clean... (well, not clean, it's got dust on it... ;) What's the '07, a W211? john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Tue, 1 Feb 2011, Richard Welty wrote: # > pics? # > # > # i can take some, although right now there's a layer of snow # hiding most of the rust. # # richard # ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2011 10:21:43 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] RE: [WJ-Grand] popcorn alert: possible fleet change wow, I don't think I've ever seen a Mercedes rust like that... sad... that 2.2L is gutless, the 2.5L has about 20% more power/torque, will find out at 2pm if it's ok without a turbo... So went to CL: M 1987 Mercedes 190d 2.5 turbo - $3800 (cupertino) The rarest of the rare. Imported in 1987, only 1,169 of these were sold in the U.S.; they cost $29,800 new and were all automatics. This one has been converted to a Mercedes 190d 5-speed. Since 5th gear is an overdrive, it only turns 2,000 rpm at 70 mpg and gets 40 mpg highway. Starts instantly and runs smoothly. Antilock brakes and driver air bag. This is the deluxe edition, with walnut dash and headlight wipers. Except for the A/C and cruise control, everything works - including sunroof, power windows, power seats, power antenna and power door locks. Odometer stopped at 28X,XXX miles; actual miles is probably around 300,000. Body is good except for a minor back-up ding on the lr fender. No cracks in the MB Tex upholstery. Dash has a few cracks. It is a Bay Area original with no rust. Repainted in the original charcoal color. Recently replaced: idler pulley, water pump, serpentine belt, brakes, heater core, battery. Tires are a matched set of 4 Michelins in good condition mounted on factory alloy wheels. On February 28, 1892 Imperial German Patent #67207 was issued for an internal combustion engine using compression ignition. On Feburary 17, 1897 a 250mm x 400mm engine produced 13.1kw of power during a successful test. Even this early prototype was 26.2% efficient! This was a significant milestone in engine technology. During that time a steam engine was at best about 18% efficient! On July 16, 1895 US Patent #542,846 was issued on the Diesel Engine. In spite of it's efficiency and potential Rudolf and his business enterprise was in serious financial straits and on September 29, 1913 while crossing the English Channel Rudolf threw himself into the frigid waters.
