The continuous chain will last another 300K miles, but it's a difficult and expensive repair. A master link chain will probably not last as long, but will cost half as much. I think the master link chain I had installed in my 190D was around $700. I looked at a '97 e300 and everything mentioned as issues were found on the car... some very expensive issues... theoretically they had been addressed on the car I looked at, but at that time I had a fully functional '91. ;) I may consider finding a rusted '91-93 with the same engine from back east and doing a transplant... or selling my rust free excellent body to someone back east... may look at a newer jetta (gas) tonight... this will be my wife's car...
