So, in the meantime, with some elevated expectations and hope, I'm going to look at a nice '95 Cherokee Country tonight... http://wagoneers.com/tmp/XJ/ALL.html - $3k, 17/21 mpg, 180k new rad, fans, batt, brakes, tires... the guy bought it from his boss, the original owner, his wife drove it for a year, now he just bought his "dream car"... chrysler something... funny, when I think dream car the word chrysler usually isn't in that sentence... 300 something or another... don't know what it is, but it must be nice to give up such a nice cherokee... ;) he also has a durango... had to put a new trans in it... again, having driven in both, I'd be selling the durango... but that's the only negative thing I can think about on this xj... :) and since I'm not acquiring the owner or his tastes I hope it'll all be ok. I do see a few little dings on bumpers, not a big deal, a shopping cart can total an xj bumper... ;) So, I'd rather suffer a few mpg on fuel to have a vehicle I know is mechanically sound, have replacement parts in my shop for, can diagnose by looking at it and know it's safe in a crash... have totalled two... this xj doesn't have a hitch, another point in it's favor, it's never been abused... so far the high powered audis, awd whatevers, gas mercedes all seem to be in the same range as this xj... since I'm interested in working on what I know and my wife is interested in getting the bathroom remodelled I may have dodged a car payment... will be praying this XJ is as nice as it looks and sounds... I've purchased two of these with over 150k on them and drove them until sold or totalled well into the upper 200's. The 4.0 and AW4 transmissions are nearly indestructible, and if they do fail, replacements are plentiful and easily swapped. I hope and pray my wife likes it... otherwise I'm in for a long search... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Snohomish, Washington -o|||||o- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 si vis pacem, para bellum tunc aperuit illis sensum ut intellegerent scripturas http://johnmeister.com http://wagoneers.com http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2011 15:57:08 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] senior moment, missed the symptoms of impending doom... you know what? there were symptoms... Paul and Bruce listen up... especially Paul... that noise coming from the front that we thought was the belt tensioner... could very well have been that oil pump chain slapping around... not sure, but it's worth checking... there is an access cover on the passenger side of the oil pan... next oil change you two should reach up in there, or have a mechanic check it... I put the 300d up on craigslist for $1200 as is... going to swap the stereo with my J10, pull the alarm system (that locked us out when we recconnected the battery while prepping to tow, forcing me to go home for the other key), and the tires with the VW. He wants 4500. Called MB in lynnwood, easily 2K wholesale in parts to rebuild. Should I rebuild, wait for a used engine, sell it as is and shop for another or buy something else. What happens if you run 87 octane in the newer engines? On the WJs with HO motors you got worse mileage and had less power, big deal, you don't gain enough mpg to pay for the better mileage. john at http://wagoneers.com - -----Original Message----- From: Bruce Caruthers Sender: owner-diesel-benz@digest.net Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2011 19:32:46 To: Reply-To: Bruce Caruthers Subject: Re: [db] Re: OT: more questions on car shopping Not surprised at the "spoiled" part. :) By the way, one thing I don't think has been mentioned about newer MB gassers (and maybe other brand newer cars) is that they require 91 octane gas.
