Hi Guys, According to the factory service manual CD, the W126 diff uses 1.3 liters of SAE90 gear lube. SAE 90 gear lube alas seems to be no more. Everything is multi-vis. Well, the parts store has a single-vis GL-1 gear oil. "Pure Mineral Oil". Nope. My reading leads me to believe that for a diff you MUST have GL-5, because it will resist the wiping action of the pinion gears. OK, GL5 it is. I can get 80W90 multivis or 75-140 multivis. Which one to use? Hopefully I can get an answer today because everything will be closed till Tuesday. - Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 May 2011 21:21:41 +0000 From: john Subject: Re: [db] Diff Lube? Amsoil 75w90 would be perfect. Go to my site and jump on the link to amsoil, there are some newer blends that might be better. I have used the Amsoil 75w90 in my 123 differential for almost a decade. I even think my mileage went up a tad when I switched. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "john" To: jerry@tr2.com, "dbl" Sent: Saturday, May 28, 2011 2:21:41 PM GMT -08:00 US/Canada Pacific Subject: Re: [db] Diff Lube? I just drained it. There was supposed to be 1.3 liters, only drained about a quarter of a cup. Probably could have got it working by just filling it, but I have the replacement diff in hand, and I'm gonna use it. Also the CV joint boots are all cracked. - Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 May 2011 18:00:48 -0700 (PDT) From: "Jerry Kaidor" Subject: [db] S Class Luxury Hard on Mechanic Got a slow start on this diff project. Spent half the day just cleaning the underside of the car. No, it's not clean yet, but I got tired of doing that :). I unbolted everything holding the diff to the car, and it still won't come out! There is a subframe that lowers along with the diff, gets a little tilty and hangs up on the forward mounting studs. Back in the house and cleaned up, a web search hints that if I support the subframe separately with another jack, the diff will come out. We Will See.... Anybody been there and done that - with a W126? - Jerry ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3429 **********************************
