Calling him back in a few minutes... thought I'd toss these pictures up to hear from the collective... appreciate caveats, what to look for etc... seems I keep forgetting little nagging details that I always seem to remember for friends, so don't not say something for fear that I already know it, because I won't mind the refresher at all, actually having a nice check list in the digest will help others... :) My wife is in the middle of painting the living room and is having fits getting the color right because of the "orange" colored hardwood floors we had installed in 1994... small area, but refinishing will be at least $1500... stairway carpet is dark green... again, installed in '94... and she's not completely happy with the little white Jetta TDI because the seat isn't very adjustable, the brakes are touchy and of course we're messing around with aamco... otherwise she likes it... so, I'm thinking we'd get the benz for her (or me if she doesn't like it) and then decide which TDI to sell to raise $3k to pay for the ongoing house improvements... I like the little white TDI, it's clean, everything (except the aamco rebuild) works, doesn't get as much mileage as my manual wagon... but it's not an embarrassment to drive either... doesn't get as good of mileage, only about 32-33 in town (still on dino oil), but I may sell my silver wagon and then have two AT Diesels. Driving a stick with a bad back in traffic can be a pain, but I like the control and added power available... (interesting that the Jetta with the AT can get up the gravel drive easily, while my manual Jetta struggles for traction...) FWIW, I also found a white '87 300TD here in everett for $1500... could use a 7 passenger car next summer... ;) I'm not sure I can go for the blue interior though... wouldn't this be a hoot if we sold both jettas and got another pair of 124s? :) my wife doesn't like driving a wagon... (estate)... not sure why, guess they don't look as nice as a sedan, but they are way more functional... ;) For photography it's nice having that rear hatch and level place to set camera lenses when changing... a trunk is ok, but not quite as functional... keep the popcorn fresh... nice having cars like the TDIs that will sell quickly... makes me think long and hard about putting them up... while I like the economy and all the functional creature comforts in the Jettas, I'm still not a big fan of front wheel drive... it's really, really hard to kick the rear end out in a hard turn... why couldn't mercedes do as good of a job on keeping things simple and functional like VW did? They shouldn't have hired Rube Goldberg... ;) I know the '87 300d with the 3.0L's won't get the mileage I got with my 2.5L TD, will cost us as much as 5mpg... but the power difference, if I am remembering correctly, was substantial. Of course I could sell my damaged Jetta, but the white '87 300TD, split the money with my wife and have a 124 estate with an automatic instead of a manual... sure, won't get 45 mpg but will get around 30mpg with a lot more comfort... I hope you guys realize that I am not the sole nutcase in this household... I was quite happy with the two Jettas and two J10s... really... ;) btw, even my son doesn't care for the little white AT TDI... brakes/seat/transmission... hoping aamco will get the trans right next time... ;) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Aug 2011 16:24:09 -0400 From: Steve Morelen Subject: RE: [db] 1987 300D - popcorn special Things that I've done [because of necessity] to an '87 300D that was purchased about 7 years ago at 200 kmiles: rear subframe mounts all the linkages in the rear suspension shocks and struts rubber mounts for the differential [PITA job] rubber brake lines vacuum pump ball joints transmission [bought the car knowing this was almost a certain failure item...bought a used box for $600] repaired the HVAC control unit due to capacitor problem [ I know guys in TX and Los Angeles with same failure ] AC doesn't work and never did for me....hole in evaporator. Wife's motivation is to get money for the house so I have to be careful I don't buy a project. :) Thinking I may buy the cheaper 300TD and deal with any issues so I have an AT Diesel wagon/estate. There are many things I like about the Jetta/TDI, but a few things that I like more about the 124 series. Rear wheel drive, no freaking computers, the ability to run wvo with minimal mods and room to work. Not sure what the power differences are btwn the tdi and that 3.0. Research time, sitting in a parking lot at a paint store. :) Thanx again for the list of issues. Good stuff, hadn't thought about those things. __john_at_http://wagoneers.com__ - -----Original Message----- From: Steve Morelen Sender: owner-diesel-benz@digest.net Date: Sat, 20 Aug 2011 16:24:09 To: Subject: RE: [db] 1987 300D - popcorn special Things that I've done [because of necessity] to an '87 300D that was purchased about 7 years ago at 200 kmiles: rear subframe mounts all the linkages in the rear suspension shocks and struts rubber mounts for the differential [PITA job] rubber brake lines vacuum pump ball joints transmission [bought the car knowing this was almost a certain failure item...bought a used box for $600] repaired the HVAC control unit due to capacitor problem [ I know guys in TX and Los Angeles with same failure ] AC doesn't work and never did for me....hole in evaporator.
