I know what you mean about sticker shock. I'll never buy a new car again. Well-researched used cars for me! My cars bracket yours (1976/W115 and 1993/W124), but both have held up well. My 1976 spent its first 17 years in the coastal Northeast and has the rust to show it. Yet it still is my solid, reliable daily driver, and has been since my mom handed it over to me in 1986. Yours should be able to give you decades' more service, especially being rust-free. I'm not sure what restoration you need to do, given your description, other than perhaps paint and upholstery? My key recommendation is to become good friends with your local Mercedes dealership parts manager. I get wholesale pricing on parts and service/repairs because of that here. If you care about original parts and exact matching, there's always the Mercedes Classic Center, down in Irvine, CA, as well. http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/enthusiast/classic_center Good luck! I'm sure many others will chime in with more model-specific assistance! - -bkc Lynnwood, WA (his) '76 MB 240D [W115.117/616.916] (hers) '92 Toyota Celica GT (For Sale!) I had a 220D and a couple different 240Ds for a short time... the 115's are a little harder to get parts via the dealer, but still possible. The 123s remind me of Ford 8N tractors... parts are available and affordable still! mostly... I was restoring an 8N tractor years ago and asked the parts guy if he had this or that... he said hold on a minute, walked in the back and brought the part out... wow. I mean things like a complete exhaust system, a shop manual, a knob for some lever, a switch... this was in the late '80s for a tractor made from about 1948-1952 or so... and the complete exhaust system was $16. There's a lot of very affordable parts for Mercedes in the 124 realm as well... and many that aren't... I started researching a W210 and found the prices to be insane... that's why I went back to a 124... just picked up an '87 300D. there are some external parts sources for Mercedes parts with new OEM stock parts... But since your 240D is a 123 - you couldn't be luckier... wide variety of parts sources... :) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Fri, 26 Aug 2011, Bruce Caruthers wrote: # Greetings, Greg. # # I know what you mean about sticker shock. I printed out the schematics for the 124... sorted out the ones that applied to my '87 300D... but while going through them I noticed that in '90 there is a little extra something that connects to the sunroof and windows called a Convenience System, started in MY 1990. Bruce, this sounds like an optional thing... I know my '91 had it... my VWs have this feature too... where you lock the driver's door and hold the key to the lock side and all the windows and sunroof close. john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2011 17:51:37 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] mileage awards The current Mercedes-Benz High Mileage champ is Gregorios Sachinidis, a Greek taxi driver who holds the known record of more than 2.8 million miles in his 1976 Mercedes-Benz 240D. http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/heritage/events_community/overview need to get over to the benz dealer to get the 250k award for my 300D...(that's km's, only has 238k miles) john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2011 11:10:42 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: [db] the 1948 cj-2a is going up for sale The '48 cj-2a that I restored about 5 years ago is going up for sale again. The current owner bought it from me in 2006. Since then he's had the brakes completely gone through and everything is in proper working order. Comes with an original PTO setup as well. I put an original engine and transmission in it and put a new top on it, had it painted white and gathered up original Willys Overland OEM parts from Toledo. It is running great. Sweet little CJ-2A with original drivetrain. It does have "updated tires and rims" and likely a non-stock color, but otherwise, it's original. http://wagoneers.com/Willys/48-CJ-2A/ The guy that bought it was a Navy pilot flying F-8's, he had to bail out over Oregon and landed in Crater Lake in 1961. :) http://wagoneers.com/Willys/48-CJ-2A/Boardman.txt Anyway, he contacted me, they aren't using it, it's just sitting around, so they've asked me to help find it a new home. We figured out what he paid for it and what he's put into it and settled on a starting price for ebay of $7000. I'll be putting it up on ebay for him. There's no reason why you couldn't drive it home. I'll be heading up into the mountains to shoot it tomorrow. They live in a beautiful little town near the pass alongside a mountain river. :) Will make for some great pictures! john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2011 17:00:30 -0700 From: Tom H Subject: Re: [db] 1982 240D restoration Don't forget Rusty - He's always come through for me.... http://www.buymbparts.biz/ TomH, '87 W126 Antioch, CA On 8/26/2011 3:39 PM, Greg Nelsen wrote: > Greetings! > > > > Long time subscriber, first time poster. > > > > I was wondering if anyone has had any experience restoring a 240D? ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3468 **********************************
