I had some work done on a 1980 240D stick shift a few years back. The car was a Florida car and the front and back windshield rubber was shot. I would have saved quite a bit if I had bought the gaskets from Rusty instead of paying MB prices. My son is still getting great service from this vehicle! Where are you in Canada? I'm in Vancouver...Washington. Long time subscriber, first time poster. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience restoring a 240D? I am in the early stages of a restoration and was wondering what others' experiences have been. The particulars: 1982 240D, Orient Red / Palomino, ~297K miles, no rust ('cept for one minor spot), all mechanicals work, save for the cruise control (natch). Me (and the car) are originally from Texas. I am the second owner of the car and have concentrated on mechanicals for the 22 years (!) I have owned it: rebuilt engine, rebuilt transmission, general replacement of parts at the prescribed intervals. Fluid replacements have also been at the recommended intervals, oil changes every 3k miles (have recently switched to synthetic), coolant flush every two years, brake system flushed every year, etc. I have not driven the car much for the past few years as I often travel extensively for business. But I am now at a local account and would like to drive my Benz once again. But the car is looking quite long in the tooth and I get sticker shock looking at new vehicles. I am particularly keen to hear of others' experiences and any tips offered. Thanks! He wants something he can sleep in as he travels a lot. He drove his xj up to Alaska. He usually goes down to South America over the winter and stays with friends there. So I don't think he'll be using this vehicle a lot, but it needs to be reliable, looks are not important. He has about a grand to spend. Anyone trying to sell a reliable vehicle in the greater Seattle area for about a grand? Take a shortened xj in trade? :) We talked about fixing his Jeep and it was determined that wasn't a good idea on many levels. A 77 year old should not be crawling over a gear shift to get out of the car, and he shouldn't be driving something that is likely going to be a bit squirrely to drive, not to mention the integrity of that vehicle has been greatly compromised, if he gets in another truck's way there's no knowing how many of the xj's lives remain. I usually quit rebuilding an xj after 2 or 3 totals. :) Since he's not into just using that for off-road fun, he needs to stay out of it. :) I'm trying to find a buyer for the parts/engine/trans. It's got a good 4.0 HO/5 spd. 3 good tires too. My son and I figure it's worth about 500 bucks. Anyone interested? Stan has no family in the area as he is from Poland, lives out of town a little ways and has decided that he can't do this without me. So we're dealing with a tight budget, language issues, lack of mechanical repair skills and age issues. Meanwhile my neighbor and my household have decided that it's time to change hot water heaters, especially since the neighbor's tank relieved itself on the carpet. And since that house was built shortly before ours, we figure this is a good time to swap ours as well. So if anyone in the area has experience with hot water tanks I'd appreciate an assist and tech info, and from all a product recommendation, we're having our hardwood floors refinished after Labor Day so this needs to be done soon. It's a 52 gal electric. Should I buy one from Lowes or Home Depot or maybe a plumber supply? Brands to avoid? How does one get the relief valve piping off? Looks like the fitting isn't a swivel and all that copper pipe going into the wall is sweated on. In other news, I actually have two cars in the monster carage, need to shuffle more stuff around and hoping I can con jim blair into coming over for some linux support so he'll help me move some workbenches. :) Another sunny day in Seattle, summer finally showed up. Hope all you east coasters are ok. Keep your feet dry and your heads down! I stuffed some foam floor underlayment in my seat and that stopped a lot of the wiggling feeling... :) I was afraid something was loose in the suspension the way it acted. Anyway, this regional tire shop does front end work and brakes, one of the few franchises that has some skilled techs, ymmv depending on location, but generally they're "ok". The tech is working up a quote for a set of lifetime KYBs... have a feeling it'll be less than jobber pricing on OEM shocks... THOUGHTS from the collective? also, found a PDF form of a part catalog on ebay, I've purchased some of these documents/service type manuals before, worth the 5 or 6 bucks usually, but was wondering if there isn't one on line somewhere, maybe in russia.. ;) MERCEDES BENZ 300D 1986-1993 PARTS LIST MANUAL So, the '87 300D is coming along... a/c works... cruise works, have a decent stereo in it... the euro headlights show up Friday, along with a new outside temp display... next on the agenda, fix the trip odometer/clock... if possible... longer term, replace rotors with power slotted... can feel that the rotors are slightly warped, both front and rear have covers... also doing some horsetrading to have a friend install my alarm that I pulled out of my '91 300D. Oh, btw, the guy that bought shadowfax put a new engine in, $6200, rebuilt the trans, etc... has $9k into it... wow. So far I'm happy with what I got for $3450, plus another $500 for a/c charging and new radiator... paid $194 for the euroheadlights with clear side markers... getting the '03 Jetta Wagon ready to sell... found a new hitch for my sedan too! The wagon just needs to be cleaned up a bit... holding off on putting it up until the benz was ready for my wife to drive it so we can put the other jetta back in aamco to get it right... arghhh.... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3469 **********************************
