My interest was piqued by a Wall Street Journal column ("Green Energy's Mr. Fixit," Nov 9) pointing out: General Motors , which makes the Volt, said Monday that the average income of Volt buyers is a whopping $175,000 a year. That rarefied space is usually reserved for buyers of German luxury cars . Meanwhile, we are taxing our average Americans in order to subsidize a $7500 tax credit to such purchasers. Maybe cash for clunkers was more egalitarian? Wouldn't a free market system be more fair than these government adventures? (fwd) Even those with the money to spend will only spend so much extra for what a Volt offers and represents. Without the rebates (heck, even WITH the rebates), would/will GM sell enough of them to finance relevant research into materials and methods to support a second generation model to allow GM to remain a competitive automotive industry player for the next 20 or 50 or 100 years? They have to adapt and grow, but that stuff is awfully expensive to invent and engineer and build, at least until they learn how to make them in a more cost-effective manner. The expensive nature is why the Volt is stuck with the gas engine it has. Theoretically, you can use an engine designed and optimized specifically for electricity generation. Instead, the Volt uses GM's most modern small gasoline engine, because it existed, which was a whole lot cheaper than creating the optimized engine for this first generation vehicle. Maybe GM won't be the electric car winner when people look back in 25 or 50 years. Maybe it will be Fisker, or Coda, or some small company yet to be created but who invented a miraculous battery. Either way, having that technological leadership and capability and educational/employment infrastructure and tax base (of both employers and employees) here in the USA is probably better for our children's future than if it's somewhere else. Just my two cents. While I own two European cars.
