He looked for a Passat TDI, talked to one dealer who said they weren't getting any, but I'm not convinced... We talked about the Toureg as well... his brother had one with the V10, and of course there were a number of issues with that one... like way too much torque... horrible economy, etc.... I think the current offerings are more in line with what will be a good thing... I'm also thinking an ML Diesel wouldn't be a bad thing for him either... not sure what Diesel offerings MB has, or if Jeep has one... ...figured that I'd check the collective to see what's currently out there and if there are any to be avoided. I'd hope there were timing chain versions out there, but an 80-100k timing belt isn't going to be a big deal either... I think Audi, VW, Mercedes and maybe Jeep have an offering... He doesn't want a pickup, he's most interested in a Wagon... I don't think he's concerned as much about costs as most of us... this is the friend that had the brand new Range Rover a few years back... he's seen my success with Diesels and Mercedes and VWs and Jeeps and contacted me to make a good selection... As with other old cars, repairs seem also to go in cycles. Finally got around to upgrade brake lights. Car came with a rear fog light on the left side. As I felt better brake lights more important than the not often used fog light I connected this terminal also to the brake light wire. On the right side there was already the hole for the bulb but no contact metal strip. Got a contact from another bulb holder unit and also soldered in short wire to brake light wire. Now I have 2 x 21W bulbs in each tail light assembly and hopefully the following driver will notice the brake lights now. So if you double the wattage, you will eventually damage the unit. But there's a workaround...use LED bulbs in the secondary slots. If you don't choose a bulb with an enormous number of elements, the added draw will be minimal. Car runs great, but leaks from every pore. The engine leaks. Drip, drip. The transmission leaks. The brakes leak. The diff leaks. That's pretty much all the fluids except for the coolant. I think I fixed the brakes - there was no sign of moisture anywhere, so I just punted. I guessed that it was leaking from the master cylinder into the brake booster, and getting sucked into the vacuum system. So I replaced the master. We'll see.... The transmission leak was due to the exhaust system. Huh? Well, there was this bracket at the bottom of the down pipe that broke. It let the down pipe vibrate against the tubing for the transmission cooler. Which caused the banjo bolt to come loose. So I tightened the banjo bolt, took the bracket off and MIG welded it. Made up new rubber mounts out of self-fusing silicone tape. I believe the leak at the diff is due to the pinion seal. Anybody changed out one of those? Hopefully, without taking the diff out of the car? The engine leak is - I think - just the oil pan gasketry. I tightened up all the screws for the bottom pan, hopefully that will help. On the *upper* pan, one of the casting holes is stripped, and the screw will not tighten. Hopefully, I can helicoil it without taking it all apart. As you may remember, we recently moved. The new garage is a mechanic's wet dream - three cars worth, fully sheetrocked, three big shop fluorescents, the floor finished off with epoxy paint. All it lacks is some more cabinetry and 220 for the compressor. Oh, and one of those gigantic rolling tool chests! And a couple more workbenches.
