Looking at the following on Thursday evening: http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/2937056437.html (Not a fan of de-badging and the Lincoln/Cadillac looking grille, but everything else looks decent. I already have two sets of stock rims with new tires from the wreck, so if the chrome bugs me, I can just put the stock rims on. And I'd swap my leather interior into it.) John pointed out to me that it seems to be lowered. I like having ground clearance so I don't scrape on curbs and crowning. How much difference is the lowering going to make? (The wrecked '93 went semi-offroading in Sedona and Yellowstone.) The current owner lists "new control arm bushings, new sway bar links, and new strut towers, new H&R springs". What exactly does this mean, in real terms? My worries about lowering would be: * wearing out tires faster (cambers, alignments) * handling (since most of the comments I've seen online about the springs seem to indicate it is a visual thing rather than a handling thing) * ground clearance * hard ride Anything in particular I should be wary of or watch for when I look at it and test drive it? Thanks! -bkc Lynnwood, WA (his) '76 MB 240D [W115.117/616.916] (hers) '92 Toyota Celica GT (long overdue to be retired or sold) (ours) '93 MB 300D 2.5 Turbo [W124.128/602.962] (wrecked, 28Mar12) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2012 00:48:49 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: [db] W124 H&R springs/sportline mods? I looked at the pictures on my blackberry on the ferry this evening, (coming back from picking up a Dickison's Marine Diesel Stove, more below) seeing them on my pc makes me dislike the grille/headlight treatment even more... the stance isn't bad from the right side, but it doesn't look right from the front... maybe if it had the stock grille and hood ornament. :) the H&R springs seem to be some variation of the "sportline" type... which means about 0.9" lower... looks like lower profile tires are on this thing too... the climate control is set to full red... mine seems to work just dandy in the blue/white range... although my wife noted her car wasn't getting cool the other day... I think we got into the 50's... ;) the compressor was replaced, so it's likely down a little 134... depending on what time you go to look at it bruce I might be able to look at it... at the price it's at I'm not sure it'll be flying away real soon... you'd do well to have lynnwood mercedes take a good look at it before you get real serious... I'm losing my touch, I missed a lot of stuff on mine when I bought it... guess I was amazed at the quality of the paint and how clean it was... didn't notice that it wasn't performing well and wobbled... but I'm still glad we have it, and glad the white jetta sedan is gone, I do like my jetta wagon though... my wife refers to it as a putt-putt car... :) I think a better description is that it's powered by a very angry sewing machine... but at 30mpg in town and 45mpg on the freeway, I'll ride along behind the little singer... :) speaking of little oil burners, picked up a Dickison's Marine Diesel Stove, for free... only cost me about $40 in ferry fees and an entire evening... hoping to make it burn WVO... if not then BioDiesel... it's got the water coils... pretty nice little unit... came off of the guy's tug boat, he got a bigger unit. It's pretty old but still in good shape. Actually came with a pie tin in the oven... and it's a stove too... stove, oven, heater and water heater... man if this thing works on WVO I'm wondering if I could set this thing up to provide some constant heat to the house in the winter, just by pumping warm water around under the floors... thinking that might be a bit optimistic... will have to look at the specs. :) if you know anything about these things I'm all ears... will post pictures tomorrow or the next day... on another completely random thought... for those of you with TDIs... remember I put an 11mm pump on my manual TDI (usually has 10mm pump) and increased power by about 20%, radically noticeable... well, on the automatic TDIs they use the 11mm pump, but SMALLER injectors... you may be heading the same direction I am... if I put the larger injectors from a manual TDI setup I wonder if I'd see the same power increase... with the slight loss in fuel economy... (48 vs. 52 freeway best)... my main concern is what it might do to the automatic trans... it has been rebuilt properly... but am I just asking for trouble if I increase the power? If I behave myself would it be an issue.... ok, yeah, I know... :) So far the forums are a wasteland, have gotten more help from friends on digest.net lists... :) So, if bruce decides to get this black 124, but doesn't like the lowered springs... I'm thinking I'd prefer to have this stance on my '87... who much work are we talking about if I buy a proper spring compressor and swap springs with him? of course we'd both head down and get a good four wheel alignment afterwards... just wondering... my '91 had a perfect stance, ride and handling... my '87 still needs some work... but is getting better... love the quiet and power of that 3.0L... the Jetta is a joke in comparison... like them both though... but it sure is nice to just glide into traffic with that power... will be a tough decision which car to take on a trip... got to get my cruise control fixed.. :) I think I'm starting to get my energy back after all these allergy issues, still not 100%, sitting here coughing and stuffed up... but it is nearly 1am and I'm still going... :) Looking at the front of this black '87 with a '94 front end I'm thinking Bruce can do better... but who knows... this thing could be a real nice car to drive... ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- john-at- http://wagoneers.com TRSTGZS Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and Diesels don't rust, they mold buy direct: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- b^\A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college educationb^] Theodore Roosevelt (American 26th US President (1901-09), 1858-1919) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Wed, 4 Apr 2012, Bruce Caruthers wrote: # Looking at the following on Thursday evening: # http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/2937056437.html # (Not a fan of de-badging and the Lincoln/Cadillac looking grille, but # everything else looks decent. So was the 300D quieter after the work? The only exhaust noise I remember from the 85 300D I owned for about eight years was when the last of the exhaust hangars gave way, alerting me to the fact that the other three had apparently given up long before, and the exhaust system was dragging on the ground. Of the three auto parts stores in my small suburban town, two of them each had one replacement rubber donut exhaust hangar, and the third had a pair. Just what I needed. I used to have several catalogues from a US firm that sells mail order automotive parts and spares; and I cannot remember the name of the firm. I remember they had specialized cats for Jeeps, VWs, Motorcycles, and a general catalogue. Does this remind you of something well known ? WVO? http://fotomeister.us/2012/04-Apr-04-DieselStove-VW-sound-Seagulls/ALL.html found an old Dickison Bering Diesel Stove for free on Craigslist... going to attempt to use it with WVO or at least BioDiesel, it has a built in water heating coil... they are used on boats for heat, hot water and cooking, quite safe as you could imagine. took the Edmonds ferry to Kingston and then down to Bainbridge Island last night to get it... nearly $40 for the ferry trip... and people commute from the peninsula daily!! If you know anything about these old stoves let me know... thinking of using it to heat my shop, office and maybe run some hot water lines into the house... hopefully using the WVO I get for BioDiesel... when my '83 J10 stepside is done it'll have a second tank and run on it as well... I'm not using bioDiesel or WVO in either the '87 300D or my '02 Jetta TDI, or the Diesel generator... so I've got quite a bit to work with... :) What I really need is one of those EPA waste oil heaters... can burn motor oil, waste veggie oil, whatever... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- john-at- http://wagoneers.com TRSTGZS Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and Diesels don't rust, they mold buy direct: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- b^\A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college educationb^] Theodore Roosevelt (American 26th US President (1901-09), 1858-1919) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3563 **********************************
