I rented the tool... only reason to keep it is if I had plans to go for the hot tune or use it as a diagnostic tool, and since I have both a generic OBDII reader and the Ross Tech VCDS for my TDI, no need... They have a kit for the GC CRD and the VW TDI... the TDI doesn't seem like it adds that much, anyone tried it or heard anything about it, especially for an ALH? I ordered some Bosio Nozzles for my '02 TDI from idparts, in the mail... my injectors were cleaned at about 210k miles by the PO... when cold there's a bit of smoke and roughness, at 225k I think this should perk it up a bit. I went with the 442/706 nozzles, which are the same as the manual injectors... should give a mild performance boost on my automatic... without risking the 01M trans... http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=29_115&products_id=617 just noticed they have nozzles for merecedes as well... I will run down and take a look tomorrow to see if it can be put back together... Hey Bruce, you might be able to sell/trade some front end parts to help him out and recover something from your '93... I think they're the same... can anyone confirm that? - --------------------- ECO TUNE - KJ CRD: the Eco-Tune for the KJ CRD from Green Diesel Engineering will be in Saturday... I think I just plug in the tool and upload... they've got this tune for several Jeep, Mercedes and Dodge CRDs as well as VW's... not sure if the tune for the TDI is worth the money, they don't claim a lot of mileage. But with 3-5 mpg for the KJ 2.8L CRD it was pretty much a no-brainer... Diesel Power magazine did a review of it. It also eliminates the EGR issues... like we have with the TDIs. Just tanked up tonight... last 3 tank average has been 20 mpg. Computer on the KJ lies, claims 23 mpg average... my records show 20.15 overall. :) - --------------------- Then, the serious wrenching, more or less, will be installing the BOSIO SPRINT 442/706 NOZZLES in my TDI the Bosio Sprint 442/706 Injector Nozzles came in the mail today. Looking through the FAQ's and how to replace the nozzles... - making some notes and sharing... http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/multi/TDI-nozzle-FAQ.htm my 2002 Jetta 1.9L ALH / AT-01M trans uses the .158 injectors: DSLA 150P 672, OEM on the 90 hp auto transmission mk4 ALH 1998-2003 engine, actual measured size is .138mm. On my other 2002 ALH I had the 5speed manual... it came with these larger injectors, but had the 10mm pump... until I had the happy accident of replacing it with an 11mm pump... I lost a little bit of economy, but gained a calculated 20% in power, and a lot more fun. My current TDI with the AT isn't getting great mileage compared to a lower mileage AT TDI we had... about 4-5 mpg less... with 225,000 miles I'm figuring the nozzles could be worn... so I'll make this mild upgrade to gain some power and will still likely see mpg increase. So, I'm going with the ones used on the manual trans ALH... should give a little improvement in power, they are, the ".184 injectors: (Euro market: DSLA 150P 357)/ (US market: DSLA 150P 442) (sprint 357/442 or PP357), OEM on the 90 hp manual transmission mk3 AHU/1Z 1996-1999 engine, actual measured size is .185mm. Similar to the "smaller".184 injectors used in later cars except it has a larger opening and was used in injector bodies with lower opening pressure (190 bar)..." the FAQ goes on to say: "Automatic transmission mk4 ALH cars with and without a chip: There is no reason to replace these .158 size nozzles with identical nozzles. Sprint 357/442 and PP 357 all are .184mm nozzles and are recommended with a fueling adjustment since the higher pressure 11mm injection pump already supplies higher pressure fuel. Smoke is considered acceptable with the .184mm/auto transmission's higher pressure 11mm injection pump." "Larger nozzles can inject the requested amount of fuel in a shorter time and closer to TDC which can reduces smoke, effectively advances timing, and lowers EGTs. When you request more power, the injection pump can allow more fuel to be injected rather than just go back through the return lines. The disadvantage of larger nozzles is that they may not atomize fuel as well as smaller nozzles which can increases smoke. Most people report a slight increase in smoke at heavy acceleration but unchanged or actually improved fuel economy with larger nozzles! This difference could be also be due to replacement of worn nozzles. The computer doesn't know the size of the nozzle but it does know how much fuel was metered at the injection pump and the duration and timing of the pilot injection opening through sensors (and not the nozzle)." "Procedure Please refer to 1000q: injection quantity adjustment and the section "Testing and changing IQ with software adaptation" for details and screenshots. A summary of the procedure is below. First drive the car for about 500 miles or so to let the new nozzles settle in. Drive the car and let it warm up to normal operating temperature. While idling, open VCDS, login with code "12233", adaptation, block 1. Adjust adaptation value higher or lower to adjust IQ to the 3.0-5.0 mg/R range. Hit "save" when you are satisfied. When you are done, exit and then go back to make sure the values you wanted are still there." I guess I need to figure out how to dial in the timing while I'm in there... with only 30-40k on the "new" belt, but old rollers...
