My parents have one and they love it, getting near 38 mpg on the highway. Myself, I drive to work 55 miles each way, most on an interstate. The upgraded safety features are certainly a plus. Anyone know what to look for when looking at these? I will soon be rebuilding the front-end on my W123, needs new rubber. The rear could use it too but I'm getting a little tired of working on this car. I'm beginning to think that a smoother, quieter, safer ride is the way to go. Your input is appreciated. Thanks, Marc Z in NC. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2012 21:17:55 +0000 From: "john" Subject: [db] Gear ratios - rpm - mpg Looking at 3 options for final gear ratio for my J10 stepside (superdawg) Diesel project. Using an SD33T/th727/np208, will ride on 235/75-15's. The rv version of the AT is 1:1. The 80 scout (engine donor) was rated at 20/25 mpg using that size tire and final gear ratio of 3.54. When I started this project I wanted to match specs, but thinking about it now, I realize now that the horrible DOUBLE NICKEL was the law! I bought another J10 for the 3.54 gears to match the scout. The current axles in superdawg are 3.31. My other 83 J10, the white long bed has 2.72 axles. So I just did the math, assuming 2,200 rpm is the sweet spot for cruising, based on peak torque of 175 ft lbs @ 2,200 rpm. Given 2,200 rpm: w/ 3.54 gears - 53.4 mph. (Double nickel!!!) W/ 3.31 gears - 57.1 mph W/ 2.72 gears - 69.5 mph Formula for MPH is: Rpm * tire size (inches) * pi * 60. / Gears * 12 * 5280 So, with superdawg as a daily driver dealing with hills, traffic and about 45mph speed limits. What's going to work the best out of these ratios, not sure how often it'll see the open freeway. Superdawg has the 3.31s mounted now. My white J10 is suffering with the 2.72s (boat anchor amc 360 v8 - 8mpg!) The sd33t might be ok with tall gears in town... It's all about economy. :) Thanx John ######## john @ wagoneers.com ######## "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" - Theodore Roosevelt ######## two word summary: Trust Jesus ######## ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2012 23:04:32 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: [db] Diesel Fuel prices - Ireland vs. Washington State - $7.63 vs. $4.19 Stephen, thanx for sharing the info on fuel taxes in Ireland... you pay $7.63/gallon, we pay $4.19/gallon (give or take...) but if we strip off the taxes - you pay ONLY $3.28/gallon, we pay $3.78/gallon... you get to pay more taxes though. Excellent example of how heavily taxed folks are in Europe... all that fine social medicine, six weeks of holiday, great roads and nice clean streets all have to be paid for... so, let's see... you're paying 1.560 euro's / liter of Diesel... and it takes 3.785412 liters to make a gallon... on http://xe.com it says 1 euro = $1.29122 USD so, that's $2.01430 USD/liter or $7.63 / gallon with 57.1% of that in taxes, or $ 4.354 / gallon USD in taxes alone... (Diesel fuel only w/o taxes in IE is $3.276 - our Diesel fuel w/o tax is about $3.78/gal) I just put 14.4 gallons in my Jetta TDI waqon, got just over 30 mpg around town... or about 8 liters / 100 km. (8 liter/100km = 30.39mpg) that would have cost $109.80 in Ireland (costs $60.03 in Washington state) - ---------------------------------------------------------------- REF: US taxes: http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/**rate/mf.pdf info on IE taxes: http://blog.aaireland.ie/index.php/2012/12/04/motor-fuel-taxes-ireland/a-breakdown-of-irish-fuel-taxes-and-hikes-in-ireland A breakdown of Irish fuel taxes and hikes 04/12/2012 On current prices*, the rate of taxation on both fuels is as follows: Petrol : Pump price 1.612 Excise including carbon 58.771c Nora 2c Vat 30.2c Total taxes: 90.971c Pre-tax price 70.229c Tax as % 54.5% Diesel : Pump price 1.560 Excise including carbon 57.902c Nora 2c Vat 29.17c Total taxes: 89.072c Pre-tax price 66.928c Tax as % 57.1% There are four forms of tax on fuel. One is excise duty, which is charged by the litre. The second is Carbon tax, which is charged by the tonne. The third is the NORA levy (National Oil Reserves Agency) levy which is 2 cent per litre. All three of these taxes are charged in the same way in that they are fixed amounts per litre and do not fluctuate as the overall price increases. All three are subject to VAT at 23%. Carbon Tax works out at 5.586 cent per litre of petrol, and 6.517 cent per litre of diesel. Both of those figures have VAT at 23% added to them. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ORIGINAL discussion, US state fuel tax rates: http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/**rate/mf.pdf - ---------------------------------------------------------------- ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- Linux: the choice of a GNU generation http://WAGONEERS.COM Snohomish, WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ...shop AMSOIL directly at: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (26th President) - 2 word summary: Trust Jesus - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Sun, 9 Dec 2012, Stephen Rigley wrote: # Now you see why I ask ;-) http://blog.aaireland.ie/index.php/2012/12/04/motor-fuel-taxes-ireland/a-breakdown-of-irish-fuel-taxes-and-hikes-in-ireland ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #3702 **********************************
